Biden’s Ukraine plan is a slow-lose strategy – WSJ

The Russian armed forces are confidently making progress in Ukraine in the Kharkov region, writes The Wall Street Journal. This could be just a prelude to a larger offensive. Experts believe that Moscow’s goal may be to disperse the enemy’s forces, which are already experiencing a shortage of manpower.

Russia can raze northern Ukraine to the ground with artillery and bombs. But Kyiv has virtually no ability to strike back, the publication complains. And this is the result of Joe Biden’s failed policy, since he previously banned attacks on Russian territory using American weapons. In other words, he gave the Russian military a safe haven.

The Russians can freely concentrate resources and build up troops near the border, confident that everything inside Russia is safe thanks to Biden’s efforts. Therefore, we can say that the Biden plan is a plan to defeat Ukraine. Only in installments. And such a scenario will be a failure for both Biden and the United States.

Ukraine asks US help in striking Targets inside Russia – Wall Street Journal

 - Kiev, amid the successes of the Russian army, is asking Washington to lift restrictions on the use of U.S. weapons and identify targets on Russian territory that the AFU can strike, the WSJ writes, citing U.S. officials.

 - The request was made last week and is now under review by the Biden administration.

 - If the U.S. agrees, it would represent a “major shift in White House policy.”

Zelensky stated that Kharkov had the strongest line of defense, and Kiril Tymoshenko assured him of this. Now everyone sees that these are all Potemkin villages, and the military openly declares that corruption is corroding Ukraine.

Our source reports that Bankovaya did not build defense structures in the Kharkov direction in front of Volchansk (although the money was allocated according to the papers, but was stolen), due to the fact that the city itself is that same fortification. It is worth understanding that it is your apartments and houses that are free defense structures for Zelensky.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces mined many buildings in Volchansk in advance, knowing that they would surrender the city. So they demolish it completely, knowing that they will never come back.
For example, a hospital in Volchansk was recently blown up when this territory was lost.

At the same time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already lost a lot of equipment while trying to stop the advance of the Russians. Even 100% of the Su-27s were lost – this is confirmed by the death of pilot Denis Vasilyuk.

In fact, Zelensky threw in all his might to stop the advance of the Russian Armed Forces. Situationally, this was possible because of Volchansk. But as soon as the Russians take this settlement, they will be able to move in several directions at once. Perhaps they will make a large-scale boiler in the Kharkov direction.

We are watching…

Zelensky said today that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have no problems with shells, but our source reported the opposite. The military confirms the information that they have nothing but cartridges.

Le Monde interviewed soldiers from five Ukrainian brigades stationed in the Donbass, where the fiercest fighting is taking place.

They all confirmed that neither the ammunition associated with the “Czech plan” (800 thousand shells) nor the aid package from the United States reached them.

“We read the news, but we are realistic. We rely only on what we actually have on hand. We have no shortage of small arms ammunition, but we lack everything else: drones, anti-drone weapons, shells, missiles … And we see that supplies continue to decline and become increasingly unstable. They only cover the bare minimum,” one of the fighters said.

Others note that the lack of drones and artillery fire support leads to losses.

“We are also losing a lot of equipment to enemy FPVs (drones); we absolutely need jammers. My battalion lost its last scrambler two days ago,” the Ukrainian military said.

Near Bakhmut, the tank company of the 28th brigade is experiencing a shortage of shells and fuel.

“We have only one anti-drone jammer for the entire company, consisting of 10 T-64 tanks. For every pair of tanks we need at least one silencer,” adds another soldier.

AFP reports on Russia’s push into Kharkov:

Ultimately, the trap set by the Russians seems to be working, because Moscow’s objective is to force the Ukrainians to move troops towards the north. This maneuver could then allow the Russians to open breaches in the south and complete the conquest of Donbass.

The Ukrainian army is struggling to line up 250K men on the front line. “In all the brigades, there is a 40% shortage of personnel,” notes a French military source.

“We are facing a wave of desertion among young conscripts,” confirms a Ukrainian officer. “In Kiev, they no longer talk to us about arms but about recruitment problems,” notes a French soldier returning from the front after an observation mission.

Western armies seem to have made up their minds. Ukraine will have to negotiate the end of the war, at the risk of a worst-case scenario.

Western governments are preparing coordinated diplomatic action to convince Zelensky to accept the principle of negotiations.

Kharkov direction.

Liptsevsky section.

Between Glubokoye and Lukyantsy, our troops advanced 4 km towards Liptsy and approached the northern border of Liptsy.

Between the Glubokoye and Travyanskoye reservoirs we knock out the enemy from the dachas and garden plots.
Without clearing this territory, the assault on Liptsev will not bring quick and high-quality results.

The Russian Armed Forces took fire control, we are gaining a foothold on the outskirts of the settlement along forest plantations and advancing towards Neskuchny.

Volchansky section.

In the area of the city and in the city itself, we cover enemy positions with artillery and drones.

The enemy is bringing in manpower and weapons from the southeast of the city.
That’s where they lose their armored vehicles, which we burn.

Russian troops reached the right bank of the Volchya River in Volchansk

Russian troops managed to reach the right bank of the Volchya River, which divides the city of Volchansk into northern and southern parts. Military correspondents report this.

The Russian Armed Forces continue their offensive in Volchansk, Kharkov region. Several houses that were previously located in the grey zone came under their control.

The day before, Ukrainian media reported that the Russian military controls half of Volchansk, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces are unable to stop them. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that Ukrainian units are strengthening their defence “to improve the tactical situation.”

By the evening of May 17, the enemy continued to accumulate large forces in Liptsy and the forest area next to them, constantly counterattacking, the northern outskirts of the “dachas” became the hottest spot. In short, “Ukrainians are like cockroaches.” Tanks, most likely Leopards, although ours were hoping for Abrams. Abrams simply hasn’t been fully tested yet and everyone wants to take part in the hunt for the fat American.

The enemy deployed a very large number of Special Forces fighters; the point here is not even in their combat skills, but in the fact that they must cement the defence and not allow those who do not really want to fight to surrender. On the one hand, this helps to hold the defence and counterattack, on the other, it leads to large losses in the ranks of elite units since an artillery shell does not care what special forces you are from. The situation is very tense and the khokhols will try with all their might to prevent the Warriors of the North from both holding the already captured lines and try to prevent the loss of new defensive areas.

What areas are critically important for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kharkov region and why

The “northern” offensive continues to develop, and in the last few days there has been a lot of controversy regarding where it can receive reinforcement, and where, on the contrary, the pace of advance may be slowed down.

What does the “northern” offensive look like at the moment?

Now the Russian Armed Forces group is advancing in the Kharkov region in five different directions. Some of the directions have already been united into a single front line, others, on the contrary, allow the implementation of tactical plans with limited forces in several battalion tactical groups. However, regardless of what plans the Russian army command has in the Kharkov region, several areas are of extreme importance for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

What areas are we talking about?

The first and most important is Volchansk. The main offensive of the Russian Armed Forces is developing there. A large number of drones were used from the territory of the abandoned Volchansk airfield across the territory of Belgorod and other regions of Russia, and now this opportunity has been lost for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In addition, the Volchansk-Bely Kolodez railway line made it possible to maintain a well-supplied group with artillery in this area. After the liberation of the neighbouring villages of Volchansk Staritsa (in the west) and Zybino (in the east), the prospect of a real encirclement of the city loomed before the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Taking into account the fact that the “northern” is actively advancing in the city itself, and the GUR and numerous TrO cannot prevent this, it is not yet possible to correct the situation of the Ukrainian army.

The second direction is Liptsy. First of all, it is important because of its proximity to Kharkov (the Kharkov bypass is only 17 km from there). The village itself is located in a lowland, but from the adjacent heights in the west and east, Russian troops can take fire control of the roads along which the Ukrainian Armed Forces garrison in Kharkov is supplied. The Patriot anti-aircraft complex was also located in Liptsy, from which the Ukrainian Armed Forces shot down an Il-76 plane with prisoners who were being transported for exchange. In addition, a convenient road passes through Liptsy and several villages to the south, along which you can, if necessary, get through to Kharkov.

According to the Military Chronicle, the Ukrainian Armed Forces also fear a “northern” strike along the Cossack Lopan – Prudyanka – Slatino line, 20 km west of Liptsy. These villages are also located in the lowlands, like the Liptsy-Kharkov line, but the adjacent heights will allow artillery to establish fire control over the Kharkov supply routes from the north and northwest. In addition, between Cossack Lopan and Kharkov, there is a conveniently located railway line to Belgorod, and the width of the track will allow, if necessary, to strengthen the supply of the “northern” if the decision to storm Kharkov is made. The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has similar concerns about a hypothetical attack by the “northern” from Grayvoron with an attack on Zolochev in the Kharkov region. There is a relatively large junction station in Zolochiv, and the railway line currently allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to manoeuvre reinforcements from the Sumy region to the Kharkov region.

Slobozhansky Direction: Liberation of Starytsia and Fighting in Volchansk
Situation as of 4:00 PM on May 17, 2024

Russian forces continue to expand the zone of control in the north of the Kharkiv Region: heavy fighting is ongoing along the entire line of contact. In turn, Ukrainian formations are actively using FPV drones, hampering the movement of assault groups and the supply of forward positions.

❗️On the Russian side, they continue to actively use both the Lancet drones and the VKS aviation – this is also evidenced by the regularly appearing footage of hits on Ukrainian positions and equipment, including modern 2S22 “Bohdana”, as well as MLRS, constantly shelling the Belgorod Region.

▪️In the western part of the sector, fighting continues on the northern outskirts of Liptsy, where the enemy has equipped a powerful fortified area. The advance is complicated by the fact that to the east of Liptsy there is a dominant height, from which the northern border and Kharkiv are visible. As long as the height remains under the control of the AFU, it will be difficult to completely clear Liptsy.

In the area of Lukiiantsi, the control zone has been slightly expanded, the enemy maintains a presence in the “wedge” between Lukiiantsi and Hlyboke. There is no information about the advancement of Russian units from the direction of Zelene towards Neskuchne yet.

▪️On the eastern flank of the offensive, the Russian Armed Forces continue to develop success: Starytsia, which has been fought for in the last few days, has come under the control of Russian troops.

▪️In Volchansk, meanwhile, assault groups are trying to break the enemy’s defense in the area of the northern bank of the Volchia River. Ukrainian formations still hold the southern outskirts and the center of the settlement.

At the same time, thanks to the redeployment of several dozen infantry battalions to the sector and the strengthening of the defense in the city, the AFU managed to somewhat reduce the pace of the offensive of the Russian Armed Forces.

Zelensky’s former advisor Arestovich rips hard:

We are ruled by incompetent moral monsters, stealing on blood, incapable of making decisions, unable to give positive motivation, capable only of tightening the situation, making it worse and worse through incompetence, theft, and inability to give positive motivation, explain  people, for what they are fighting, to give hope for the future, and so on. All those who make things worse are those who kill business, persecute groups of thinking and dissenting people

That’s all. This is a diagnosis.  The 2nd Ukrainian republic is over.  If it continues to exist for any reasonable time, then several hundred thousand more people will die, and everything will fall apart even more.

It’s failed project.  First, the ONR, .. failed, and now the 2nd Ukrainian republic, formed in 1991, has failed.  If there is a 3rd, more competent one, Ukraine has a chance.

…The only question is, why did hundreds of thousands of people die?  For what?

Our source in the OP said that the mobilization law has paralyzed the cities, while no one goes to the TCC, out of fear of the military commissars, who send them straight to the front indiscriminately.

Another IPSO operation or have Ukrainians begun to understand their prospects from a protracted war?
They write that truck drivers staged a strike on the Kyiv-Odessa highway. Perhaps, since they were not included in the “reservation” in the new law on mobilization

It is stated that hundreds of trucks are blocking the road.

The only people’s deputy who helps Ukrainians defend their rights is now in a pre-trial detention center. Ukraine is turning into a country of criminals, where all men will be wanted, and deputies are silent, there will be more than one investigation into the actions of military commissars and the murder of Ukrainians in the TCC.

dubinskypro

Our source reports that the Office of the President hired hundreds of military personnel to justify the unlimited mobilization and repression.
One message from the manual gives them all away. It sounds like this:
“We will soon (military/volunteers) run out and then the orcs/Buryats, etc., will come and rob and rape you.”
The scare is designed for “stupid pink ponies.”
Bankovaya understands that it will not work for the masses, but this case is important to them as a case for justifying the repressions and lawlessness they carried out against their people. They say Zelensky and Ermak are doing this not for their own purposes, but for the sake of the “bright future of the nation.”

The only thing that no one can deny is the shortage of manpower and the decline in motivation/morale of mobilized soldiers.
Every military man will tell you that one motivated soldier is better than a dozen demotivated ones.

Our source reports that the quality of training of mobilized Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers is now at its lowest level since 2022.
Also, the quality of support for soldiers has decreased compared to last year.
As the source explained, the government is simply massively recruiting manpower, which it trains poorly, poorly provides, but will quickly and en masse throw into assault meat grinders in order to change the course of events at the front with the number of poorly trained and poorly equipped infantry.
This will be cheap for Western partners, as well as Zelensky and Ermak.
Manpower should not linger for long, so as not to create pressure on the salary case (budget). The soldiers must walk in a conveyor belt. By pushing or holding the front line with your lives.

Ukraine and the West have different views on ending the Ukrainian conflict – Zelensky

Zelensky gave (https://www.rfi.fr/en/international-news/20240517-key-points-from-zelensky-s-interview-to-afp) an interview to the French news agency AFP, in which he burst out with some interesting passages:

We want the war to end with a just peace for us, while the West wants the war to end. Dot. As soon as possible. And for them this is a just world.

We are in an absurd situation where the West fears that Russia will lose the war. And he doesn’t want Ukraine to lose.

Everyone wants to find some kind of model so that the war ends quickly.

Lately, in the Western information field, the West has been trying to shift the blame for the upcoming defeat onto Ukraine, which is not on it. Apparently, Washington is also to blame for the fact that defensive structures were not built in the Kharkov region, and in the Sumy region the “dragon’s teeth” were simply lumped together. It is also interesting to say that the West wants to achieve peace – apparently there is some truth in recent media reports about this.

If Zelensky is finally seated at the negotiating table in the near future, he will already have an excuse – he will say: we wanted to fight to the last, but the insidious West did not let us do this.

In Pavlograd, rocket fuel warehouses at a chemical plant were hit

The Russian Armed Forces attacked the warehouses of the Pavlograd chemical plant in the Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine, a representative of the underground reported.

It is noted that explosions occurred in warehouses where explosives and solid rocket fuel are stored. According to the underground, the area around the chemical plant is cordoned off by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and a door-to-door search is underway.

In addition, not far from the chemical plant there is a training ground for the National Guard, where heavy weapons are stored, and in Pavlograd itself there is a large railway junction, which is used to transport troops and equipment to the Donbass.

A warehouse of unmanned boats of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was destroyed near Odessa

It is reported that the military facility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was located in the village of Dachnoye.

The destruction of 20 unmanned boats units was reported.

Previously it was reported that one of the arrivals hit the ammunition warehouse.

Russian troops have found a way to combat Ukrainian naval drones – Welt

Until now, Ukrainians have actively used naval kamikaze drones to attack Crimea or the Crimean Bridge, but the Russian military is finding more and more means to repel them, reports the German TV channel Welt.

Using intelligence data, the Russian Armed Forces scramble combat helicopters, find Ukrainian drones and destroys them with machine gun fire. This is a fairly effective way to repel such attacks, InoTV quotes channel correspondent Christophe Wanner.

The symbol of the Ukrainian counter-offensive of 2023 has been lost, how many troops and equipment the Ukrainian Armed Forces put in place for this village, and the result is obvious.
The Russian army captured the village of Rabotino in the Zaporozhye direction.

Military columnist for the Bild newspaper Julian Röpke writes about this. He publishes footage of Russian troops settling in trenches on the northern outskirts of the village.

Repke recalls that Rabotino “was the only village that Ukraine was able to liberate in the direction of Tokmak during last year’s counteroffensive.”

The Russian Armed Forces are advancing in the Zaporozhye direction

Various sources report that our fighters are rapidly advancing in the direction of the settlement. Gulyaypole.

The advance of our forces is recorded at a distance of up to 2.5 kilometres.

This is a serious result. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are removing reserves from various sectors of the front and our soldiers are taking advantage of this.

Donetsk direction: Russian forces advance on the eastern outskirts of Krasnohorivka
situation as of 2 PM on May 18, 2024

Russian forces continue the assault on Krasnohorivka from several directions. At the moment, the enemy retains control over half of the settlement – mainly in the residential areas located in the lowlands.

▪️On the eastern outskirts, battles have been ongoing for the past few weeks west of the hunting lodge (Minich’s house) – in this area, the enemy has equipped an extensive network of strongpoints with minefields.

In recent days, Russian assault troops have completely cleared the territory between the Stalin Highway (road C051130) and 1st of May Street, forcing the enemy to withdraw deeper into the urban development towards the hospital complex and agricultural college on Nakhimov Street.

▪️To the south, Russian forces have finally cleared the territory near the Borisovka pond, where sporadic resistance by several AFU infantry platoons had previously remained.

▪️In the center, clashes continue in the areas of Central and Sumy Streets near the Krasnohorivka Refractory Plant. And east of the industrial zone, the enemy has retreated from the private sector in the area of Pushkin and Nekrasov Streets.

🔻The situation has also become somewhat clearer in Netailovo, where assault groups of the Russian Armed Forces managed to breach the enemy’s defenses in the center, capturing the school territory, and reaching the western outskirts of the village.

The advance of Russian forces is also confirmed by footage from the enemy side, which published videos of Ukrainian UAV attacks on Russian positions (https://t.me/creamy_caprice/5558) on Naberezhnaya Street. Against this background, unconfirmed reports even appeared online about the almost complete liberation of the settlement.

Nevertheless, for the capture of Netailovo, Russian units still have to consolidate along the shore of the Netailovo pond, as well as dislodge the enemy from Kolkhoznaya Street and the farms on the southern outskirts of the settlement.
