A barge struck the Pelican Island Bridge in Galveston, Texas, causing an oil spill and closing the only road access to the island.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, around 10 a.m.
The bridge, which connects Pelican Island to Galveston, was hit by a barge owned by Martin Petroleum, according to the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management.
The collision caused a portion of the bridge to collapse, and power was temporarily disrupted on the island, but secondary power was restored by 1 p.m.
The barge also spilled oil into the surrounding waters, causing a major disruption to road and water traffic.
