Inside the Restricted Burn Zone of Lahaina - What Is it Like Now? (Video)
In this 20 April 2024 video, Peter Santenello meets with local firefighter Jonny for a tour of downtown Lahaina over eight months after the deadliest fire in modern American history torched the city of Lahaina on the Hawaiian Island of Maui.
They enter the restricted burn zone to better understand the situation from a local’s perspective of what was lost at the time and how very slow the cleanup is proceeding and how limited the efforts to rebuild are progressing.
This is the beginning of a 7-part Hawaii series. After making this video, I returned to my hotel with many different emotions coursing through me. One was of frustration that Lahaina still looks like this eight months after the fire, which is completely unacceptable. If this was a priority for the US government, things would look much differently.
