For the first time in 19 years, a “severe” solar storm warning has been issued for several plumes of solar material about to slam into the Earth. The sunspot AR3664 is notably large, roughly 15 times the size of Earth, and its recent activity is drawing significant attention due to the scale of its eruptions. From May 7th to May 9th, multiple Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) were associated with flares from this region. These CMEs are predicted to merge and potentially impact Earth by early May 11th, UTC.
The size and activity level of AR3664 bear resemblance to the sunspot responsible for the Carrington Event in 1859, which remains the most powerful geomagnetic storm on record. During the Carrington Event, the geomagnetic disturbances were so severe that they caused auroras visible as far south as Cuba and Hawaii and even led to fires in telegraph offices due to electrical surges.
Powerful geomagnetic storms can have various impacts on Earth, including voltage control issues with the grid, satellite problems, radio blackouts, and scrambled GPS navigation. They can also result in the aurora borealis being seen further from the poles than usual, with G4 storms, in particular, sparking the northern lights as far south as Alabama and northern California.
Given the historical context and the potential implications of these recent CMEs, this situation is closely monitored by space weather experts, and advisories are likely being issued to prepare for possible effects on satellite operations, power grids, and communication networks.
