Moon Snail Egg Sand ‘Collars’
Beach trash walking for me is usually around 4 am. I try to get there before the screeners to pick up the towels, clothing and toys left behind. During this soft beach opening, I have taken to walking during the day and have found all sort of interesting sea creatures such as these Moon Snail Egg Collars. Most of these are on our bay, which is a muddy bottom, although have found them on the ocean at low tide.
Apparently there are supposed to be eggs, haven’t found any yet. According to Wikipedia: Sand collars are the characteristic egg masses of one family of sea snails, the moon snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Naticidae. These egg masses are often found washed up either whole, or sometimes in fragments, on sandy beaches where moon snails are living, either intertidally or sub-tidally.

The Ocean is full of wonder. How many times and things in life we have just walked past and don’t even think about what they are. I hope that over the next few weeks, I will take the time to look and observe nature rather than beach trash.
