U.S. Under Attack: 7 Oil/Gas Disasters, 4 Days. BOP Failure Sent Workers Running For Lives From Out Of Control Well

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

After six fossil fuel disasters left parts of the nation looking like a war zone over three days this week, an out-of-control Whiting Oil and Gas company frac well in North Dakota blew out Thursday, sending 15 workers running for their lives in fear of an explosion. A blow out preventer failed. Around 10,000 gallons of poisonous fluid has been leaking from the wild well per hour.

The hydraulic fracturing (fracking) well blowout occurred when a blow out preventer (BOP) failed south of Watford City, about seven miles north of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Unit in North Dakota according to the Department of Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms.

Fifteen workers, who freafully ran from the well, left their pickups at the site and called McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office, said McKenzie County Emergency Manager Jerry Samuelson. He directed a school bus in the area to pick up the workers.

“When that thing blows, you just never know,” Samuelson said. “There’s a possibility of explosion.”

The BOP seal leaked and caused the accident, according to Denver, Colorado-based Whting Oil and Gas company spokersperson Jack Ekstrom.

“It’s still a tad dangerous up there,” Kris Roberts, with the health department’s Division of Water Quality said mid-day Friday.

Bob Wisness, who lives about a mile from the well, said he saw what looked like a green vapor after the incident. He received a message from Whiting that a blowout occurred. Although Wisness didn’t feel he was in danger, he started texting friends who live near the site but were out of town, he said.

“There are well sites that are closer to people’s homes. I’m glad it’s not me. Other people have good reason to worry about it,” Wisness said.

While no immediate injuries were reported, the initial release sprayed oil and water on to snow that is on top of the ice-covered Cherry Creek, according to Helms.

“To the best of our knowledge, nothing has gotten into the water,” Helms said.

Whiting Oil and Gas claimed about 50 barrels of flowback water were released but contained on site within a berm.

Fracking had been completed at the well and the fluid released was a poisoned water-based solution that flows back to the surface. As much as one million gallons of water is used per well. The well continued releasing about 200 barrels of poisoned fluid per hour, about 10,000 gallons per hour. The company says the fluid was directed to tanks and contained on site, according to Ekstrom.

Crews from Wild Well Control were brought in to assist with the out-of-control well. Helms said the cause of the accident will be closely examined because blowouts carry serious health and safety risks. (Author’s emphasis.)

In 2012, a worker died when hit by pickup during the chaos after a blowout in Williams County, North Dakota.

This is the seventh major fossil fuel disaster across the nation this week, as this reporter wrote Friday:

Bright glows of fireballs brightening night skies worse than detonated bombs; blown up homes while others rocked to their foundations; evacuations of families; injured workers, derailed train leaking more chemicals, and a highly toxic coal slurry covering at least six miles of waterway emptying into a major river have left the countryside looking like a war zone.

Earlier this month, federal regulators fined Whiting Oil and Gas and two other companies for mislabeling the type of flammable crude oil they were transporting by rail. The penalties? A slap on the wrist total of $93,000.

Transportation Department inspectors began random tests last summer in attempt to ensure producers, shippers and railroad companies properly lable oil from Bakken shale region of North Dakota.

The inspections started after a train carrying crude oil derailed and killed 47 people in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. Whiting Oil and Gas was among the first to be fined from the new inspections.

After a sixth fracking explosion injured a worker and sent a tank flying 100 feet in West Virginia last month, the government shut down a repeat offender drill company with a cease and desist order and a violation notice. The orders came as America’s main oil and gas trade group prepared to launch another aggressive campaign to promote non-renewable energy.

Here’s how people in the UK are preventing the dangerous fracking process in their communities.

Getting to be one a day. It will increase, until we rise up and stop it.

    • TheMoneyMan

We need to rise up against cars to they are killing people every day.

      • Michael

I would like to find out these shills names that are working for the government putting disinformation out to the public though. When the change of regime comes in I bet that will be a nice list to see.

        • Deborah Dupre

I’ve been working on that. Dems and republicans with their hands out to the silent killers must go. Did you know the Green Party has a strict policy of not accepting corporate funds?

How I wish the independent candidates would have a meeting and decide which of them has the best chance so we can unitedly vote for that one.

          Thank you, Michael.

It is our cars using oil and gas that are contributing to this whole problem. The easy oil is gone. There is plenty more there, assuming you want to deal with the environment effects of burning it, but getting it is messy and dangerous. This is all going to continue until we get rid of our dependence on oil. And, for those who believe Global Warming / Climate Change is a hoax, the real hoax is the Koch brothers and oil companies putting out lies about it for their own short term financial benefit.

dont forget your computer you are on right now, the power to generate it, and the plastic iit is made of

Fukushima is not getting the population down quick enough for the rothchilds, federal reserve, freemasons, skull and crossbones….A.K.A…..ILLUMINATI……Go read the Georgia guidestone and see how they want us GONE

      • Deborah Dupre

Yes, they want us gone but the thing that really gets my goat is most of us are paying them to suicide us.

    • AMERICA HAS RISEN

I approve fracking in the entire America. (I mean, only in republican states)
The more people we can poison the better for me in getting that control I need.
So far so good. My plan is working.
Ok next …. Gun control. Where’s my pen and my phone?
Bugger Joe Biden I told you to leave my pen alone.
I’m getting secret service to carry that around now.

    • Purple Mike

Why is fracking allowed? Why is everyone’s head in the sand about this?

      • Doccus

I’m sorry, what? “Why is it allowed?” Why, my goodness. Pure as the driven snow ;-)
Because the people that make the regulations are in bed with (sometimes literally!) the people that do the extraction!
We have no power to legislate against them until there is a complete overthrow of the current hegemony…

    • WhyHurtPeople

“to the best of our knowledge nothing got in the water?” IS ANYONE DUMB ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THIS? LET THEM KEEP FRACKING AND THE USA WILL NOT HAVE ANY WATER. YOU DUMBASS-LAZY HUMANS. YOU DESERVE WHAT YOU GET AND IT’S COMING LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN WITH A BABY TIED TO THE TRACKS WHILE EVERYONE WATCHES WITH THEIR CUMULATIVE HUMAN HEADS UP THEIR ASSES!

Oil and gas development has its dangers just like other high risk developments. Here in ND it comes with the territory, and is not and has not been terror related. Fear where fear is not due is harmful, be careful what you spread. And remember we are armed in ND so we pretty much can take care of ourselves.

      • Paul Brown

No one is calling this terrorism. The US is under attack by the corporations, the one percent.

Renewable energy is now cheaper than fossil fuels, not even counting the casualties. Those casualties are unacceptable. There will be very, very few casualties from green energy compared with extracting, processing, and burning carbon. No poisoning, no explosions, no destruction of the environment we all depend on for life.

I’m sorry you think guns are a solution to anything, when they’re part of the problem.

    • IRHologram

Fear is not the same thing as wisdom. These are “bound to happen accidents,” and in the sense that an accident is unpredictable, they were not accidents at all. Fracking releases toxic, corrosive, flammable gas. Up to the Gulf Oil disaster, there had been one or two BP failures???EVER. Now there are several a year. The clathrates are melting. I think this is affecting the technologies. In any case, the air and water are being cowled by fracking and it’s an intolerable practice, considering many folks in many fracking areas are able to set the water out of their taps on fire.

      • Deborah Dupre

The fracking accidents are so common, they are now simply referred to as fraccidents. Thanks, IR for pointing out this has more to do than low blow fear-mongering. And you’re correct: It’s time to choose: old fashioned dangerous fuel or water.

    • Jay

Fracking is one of the most environmentally destructive practices developed in the 20th century. It is the moronic equivalent of burning down your House to keep warm for a few hours in the winter. It is a short sighted and ethically wrong practice that in time will be looked upon as foolish as the Romans using lead in their drinking and eating vessels or smoking cigarettes to clear up post nasal drip. In time technology will advance past this awful practice, we can only hope we aren’t poisoned in the mean time.

    • billyjack

The ignorance of the subject matter in this article as well as the commenters inability to state anything other than the party line makes any rational discussion of the subject matter impossible.

As stated by Thomas Paine”…to argue with a man who has renounced his reason is like giving medicine to the dead.”

      • Paul Brown

Well, your comment certainly justifies you conclusion.
