Bomb Threats Multiplying Across Nation: Talking Heads Fueling Bomb Threats

The horrific bombings in Boston have fueled a nationwide bomb threat marathon. University and municipal police departments are contending with bomb threats from teenagers and unidentified criminals who are giving police agencies across the nation headaches.

Authorities can’t ignore the prank calls.  They never know what is a prank call and what is a real terroristic threat.

In New Jersy:

Bomb threats were made in several schools around the state today, including West New York, Scotch Plains and Marlboro. Edison High School was shut down today for the second time in two days because a threatening note was found. MOREHERE

In Indiana

In that statement, UE said, “The UE Athletics Twitter account received a nondescript threat today that is currently under investigation by the Evansville Police Department. The University of Evansville has canceled tonight’s scheduled baseball game at Braun Stadium. In light of yesterday’s tragic events in Boston, we are taking this extraordinary measure as our first priority is the safety and security of our students and guests. We will continue to work with the EPD to evaluate the situation.” MOREHERE

In Long Island 

A 16-year-old Orthodox student from Long Island was arrested earlier today for making a bomb threat against his high school – the Ruth and Hyman Simon High School, Mesivta Ateres Yaakov of Greater Long Island. MOREHERE

In Texas

HOUSTON, TX – Every bomb threat is taken seriously. More so, now after the horrific events at the Boston Marathon.

The kids at Westbury High School know this in eerie fashion, having received its third bomb threat in so many days.

No suspects yet. But the police and HISD are doing everything they can and taking every precaution to make sure the school is safe.

In Chicago

Witnesses called police after a man on the train made the threats, according to preliminary dispatch reports.

In Baltimore

Carroll County Circuit and District court buildings will be closed all day Tuesday as the county sheriff’s office investigates a bomb threat made to Circuit Court, police said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, the court buildings were evacuated and traffic within the immediate area detoured.

Fire departments and law enforcement officials are on the scene of another Teays Valley bomb threat, this one at the West Middle School in Commercial Point. More details will be published as they become available. MOREHERE

Around the world, police agencies are on high alert for copy cat bombings and threats to mass entertainment venues.  As of yet, no one has come forward and taken responsibility for the Boston bombing. Authorities don’t know if the bomber is a lone bomber, a group of domestic malcontents, or a global terrorist group.

Law enforcement in Houston is carefully watching what is going on in Boston following Monday’s bombings of the Boston Marathon. Some precautions are already being taken.

Pundits, prognosticators and, yes, provacateurs are turning up the heat on the rumor machine. What they don’t know, they invent, all to scare the crap out of people or generate ratings. Columnist Jeffrey Goldberg says

Part of talking for a living is knowing when to shut up. It is obviously true that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives needs a director. It might even be true that Republicans could try a lot harder to put a director in place. But after an explosion about which we know almost nothing, and in the face of sudden, violent death at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, this is not the time to guess about the perpetrators or to recommend policy fixes that would prevent such attacks from taking place.
