Fla. Candidate Calls For Obama's Death By Hanging - Secret Service Responds

In a tweet that sent a flurry of re-tweets throughout twitterdom, Republican state House candidate Joshua Black called for the president of the United States to be hanged on Twitter yesterday.

The tweet generated a widely read article in the Tampa Bay Times, a lot of new Twitter followers, a call from Anderson Cooper’s guest booker, an interview for Political Connections on Bay News 9 and, naturally, a visit from the Secret Service.

Black, a taxi driver, said that Secret Service representatives were waiting for him at his home when he got there and questioned him extensively about his tweet and his intention toward the President.

“It was not a threat,” said Black, insisting that his tweet - “I’m past impeachment – It’s time to arrest and hang him high” - was merely expressing outrage over the president killing U.S. citizens with drone attacks and without due process.

Black said he resigned from the Florida Pinellas County Republican Executive Committee at the request of county chairman Michael Guju. But he dismissed a tweet from Gov. Rick Scott that Black “immediately withdraw his candidacy to represent families of Pinellas County.”

“I do not take orders from the governor, I’m staying in the race,” Black said.

Black is 31, African American, lives in Pinellas Park and drives a taxi. He moved to Florida in 2007 after practicing street evangelism in St. Louis, according to his campaign website.

He is running to represent District 68, which includes Northeast St. Petersburg, eastern Pinellas Park and southern Feather Sound.

Another Republican House candidate was outraged at Black’s tweet, according to the Times. “You aren’t seriously calling for the killing of Obama are you?”

District 67 candidate Chris Latvala replied. “I know you are crazy but good heavens. U R an embarrassment.” 

Black continues to defended his tweet saying;

Obama should be held responsible for ordering a drone strike that killed a U.S. citizen overseas, he said. “He should be executed for treason,” Black told the Times. “I think the appropriate punishment is death. They killed Benedict Arnold. (Obama) shouldn’t be allowed to kill Americans without a trial.”

In a Facebook post, Black reiterated his belief. “I make no apologies for saying that the President is not above the People,” he wrote.

“If ordinary Americans should be executed for treason, so should he.”
