Now Hawaii Confirmed! CDC Isolates Hawaii Ebola Patient For Testing

UPDATE, 10/2 — 12:15 a.m. ET: The Hawaii State Department of Health released a statement, saying they are “evaluating a patient in isolation at a Honolulu hospital for possible symptoms that may be consistent with Ebola.”

“The department was notified today of the case and is in the preliminary stages of an investigation into the travel history and clinical presentation of the individual. The patient is still undergoing evaluation and may be diagnosed with a number of conditions other than Ebola,” the statement said. “The department is working closely with the hospital which is following all precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of patients, staff, and the community.”

“At this time, the department is not releasing any additional information on the patient or the patient’s status,” it added, noting an update would be released as “new information becomes available.”

The Department of Health has confirmed a patient is currently in isolation and undergoing testing in a Honolulu area hospital for the Ebola virus.

A male who was checked in to the hospital on Wednesday morning is currently undergoing testing for several conditions, Health Department officials said.

The Department of Health would not confirm to that the man had traveled to or from West Africa in recent weeks.

The Department of Health confirmed to the Hawaii outlet that the patient is currently undergoing a battery of tests, but has yet to be specifically tested for the deadly virus.

The officials declined to provide KHON with any details regarding symptoms and would not say whether or not the patient has been to West Africa recently.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the first case of Ebola in the U.S. on Tuesday. The patient was diagnosed in a hospital in Dallas, Texas.

According to a report by the Associated Press, a “patient was in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, which had announced a day earlier that the person’s symptoms and recent travel indicated a possible case of Ebola.”

The patient developed symptoms of the virus after a trip from Liberia to Texas. However, the patient did not show symptoms during the plane trip, the CDC said. 

Zachary Thompson, director of Dallas County Health and Human Services, said health officials have the proper equipment to care for the patient. 

Texas officials said no other cases in the state are suspected, according to the report.
