Just In: Brussels Explosion: Man 'Neutralized' by Belgian Police After Blast in Central Station (Videos)

The main square and central station in Belgium’s capital Brussels have evacuated by police after reports of a blast.

Witnesses said La Grande Place was cleared in seconds, while others took pictures of a fire in the nearby Central Station.  

A man wearing a explosive belt has been “neutralised”, police said.

One witness told Agence France Presse the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar”.

The force tweeted about an “incident with an individual at Brussels Central station”.

It said: “The situation is under control but please follow the instructions [of police]“.

A police spokesman said the man had been shot by soldiers who were on patrol at the time. 

He said there were no other casualties but did not make it clear whether the man shot was still alive. 

Arnaud Reyman, spokesman for rail network operator Infrabel confirmed the station was evacuated.  

He said: “There was panic in the station and on the tracks after an incident.”

Bart Crols, a spokesman for the SNCN railway company, confirmed all rail traffic in the city has been suspended after witnesses tweeted a picture of a fire at Central Station.

A senior Belgian law enforcement official told POLITICO that a crisis meeting of top state officials was expected to start immediately. 

One witness told the website people had panicked after hearing the explosion and ran “in every direction”.

La Grand Place is one of the city’s major tourist attractions and was full of people enjoying a hot summer’s evening. 

The city has been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people on the Brussels subway and at an airport in March 2016    SOURCE

A man has triggered a small explosion in Brussels Central Station, a spokesman for the Belgian federal police told the BBC.
The man was shot by soldiers inside the station and no-one else is believed to have been injured.
Police say the situation is under control. The station and the city’s Grand Place were evacuated.
