Emergency Generators: How to Choose The Right Generator For Your Home

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Off Grid Survival

The Size of your generator depends on your unique power needs; these needs have to be determined before ever purchasing an emergency generator. This worksheet is designed to help you determine the right size generator for your situation.

  1. Select the items you wish to power at the same time. Using the table below, fill in the running watts and additional starting watt requirements on the “Your Power Needs” worksheet.
  2. Add the running watts of the items you wish to power. Enter this number in the Total running watts column.
  3. Select the one individual item with the highest number of starting watts. Take this one number, add it to your total running watts, and enter the total in the Total starting watts box.

Once you have determined how many watts you will likely use, make sure to select a generator that runs slightly above your peak wattage. Continuously running a generator at peak wattage will quickly burn the generator out.

You also need to keep in mind that bigger doesn’t always mean better. If you buy a 7500 watt generator and you only need something that can handle 2500 watts, you are going to be wasting a significant amount of fuel. This is something that you should factor into your decision since fuel will become more expensive and harder to find during times of crisis.

I have lived with generators since 1988. A single mum, the first years were in a train carriage on a block of land (400 acres). As close to the earth as it gets. Nowadays things have been honed a bit to a small house with solar and turbine hybrid power.
The generator is still a big feature – but one learns which brands will do what

The main one (we keep two) is an 8 kva V twin Vauxhall petrol.
Diesel are noisy and dirty, and this Vauxhall has outlived former diesel generators including a Honda.
Maintenance is the key word. Simple maintenance

It is large enough to charge the solar battery charger and to run in summer (or winter) the air conditioner.
The smaller one is a 3Kva back up and is used for smaller jobs – it is a cheapy at 190.00 (Chinese) but it takes some hours off the bigger noisier one. Mainly used for pumping water.

Many people do not know (in Australia) that the government subsidises petrol and diesel off road use. If one is not connected to the grid one can apply for and get between 30 and 40% refund of the fuel bought. This application (for us) is every three months.

We have lived like this since 2004 and I cannot imagine how much in power bills we have saved.
The initial outlay for the solar and the wind turbine (a 500W) was 14,000 all up. People argue that “it takes years for it to pay for itself”.
This is not the point. During those years – the money which is STILL IN YOUR pocket is what counts

People from in town (5 klm away) drive past just to watch our turbine…
