Outlook

The wet weather pattern will continue into the weekend until a robust cold front finally moves through the region on Sunday. After a brief dry period early next week, another rain system will approach by mid-week.

Weather Hazards

Occasional heavy rain will be possible off and on through the weekend. As rounds of widespread rainfall may occur across the area, the threat of flash flooding and flooding of rivers and streams will increase.

Heavy rainfall is expected through the weekend. As usual when it rains, there will be runoff on area roadways and ponding that could lead to hydroplaning for vehicles that are exceeding safe speeds. Please slow down and arrive alive and uninjured. Remember to keep your umbrella with you and use your headlights so other motorists can see you on the roads.

Macon County is under a Flood Watch and the southern section is under a Flood Advisory. A copy of the flood advisory is posted below:

South central Macon County in western North Carolina…

* Until 1245 PM EST Friday.

* At 1233 AM EST, stream gauges along the Little Tennessee River from Franklin to the Georgia state line indicate the river remains near full. The river appears to have crested and has begun to recede in some locations, but runoff from earlier rainfall will maintain near full-bank conditions through the morning hours.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include Otto.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

Only when it is safe to do so, please report floodwaters or landslides flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather Service by calling toll-free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on our Facebook page, or via Twitter using hashtag NWSGSP. Your message should describe the event and the specific location where it occurred, including roadways, nearby cross streets, stream names, and other landmarks.
