‘Chilling’ footage shows London Bridge terrorist wipe knife on beard after killing eight people

London Bridge terror leader Khuram Butt ‘washed blood off knife with his beard’

terrorist washed his knife and wiped it on his beard in a “chilling gesture” after killing eight people at London Bridge and Borough Market, an inquest has heard.

Khuram Butt, 27, was caught on CCTV cameras cleaning his 12 inch pink ceramic knife inside Black and Blue restaurant while Youssef Zaghba, 22, took a drink from the tap behind the bar.

The terrorists’ movements were part of harrowing footage showing the London Bridge terror attack unfolding in real time has been played at the inquests into the eight victims’ deaths.

Jonathan Hough QC, counsel for the coroner, had warned the families of the victims in court that “distressing images” would be shown, and Butt’s reaction was “the most chilling”.

A grim compilation of video clips from CCTV, dashboard cameras and handheld camera phones charted the progress of the atrocity in minute detail.

It showed the moment, at 10.06pm on June 3 2017, a white rental van first mounted the pavement on the east pavement of London Bridge and hit two pedestrians, sending one woman flying.

A packed courtroom at the Old Bailey was warned in advance about the graphic nature of the CCTV, which showed the vehicle zig-zag across the road into crowds of pedestrians.Xavier Thomas, 45, was knocked over a balustrade to his death in the River Thames by the force of the impact.

CCTV from a bus then recorded the traumatic moment Christine Archibald, 30, was caught beneath the wheel of the van and dragged along the road for several yards.

Her partner, Tyler Ferguson, could be seen desperately chasing the vehicle and then sliding to his knees next to his stricken fiance, who later died of her injuries.

Attackers Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba then crashed their van outside the Barrowboy and Banker pub, sending debris raining down on punters in the courtyard of the Boro Bistro below.

Christine Archibald (known as Chrissy) had told her fiance, Tyler Ferguson, that she loved him moments before she was killed 

Jonathan Hough QC told the second day of the inquests at the Old Bailey: “You will get the impression of many people out on the street on a Saturday night.”

One passerby began filming on his mobile phone as the terrorists charged into the Boro Bistro courtyard, screaming: “Allahu Akbar.”

Mr Hough said most of the stabbings that followed could be described as a “brief but furious assault”.

Terrified shrieks mixed with the sound of the bar’s loud music could be heard on the clip as the three men began stabbing customers at random.

Redouane – wearing a stripey jumper – was filmed bending down to stab Kirsty Boden, a 28-year-old Australian nurse who was tending to fatally injured waiter Alexandre Pigeard, 26.

Butt, meanwhile, was seen “lunging at customers with a knife”, Mr Hough said.

All three men, with 12-inch ceramic knives strapped to their wrists, then proceeded up Borough High Street, where they attacked several passersby.

CCTV showed them being confronted by two British Transport Police officers – Leon McLeod and Wayne Marques – along with off-duty officer Charlie Guenigault.

As the attackers lurched forward towards the men, one of the eventual victims – Ignacio Echeverría, 39 – jumped off his bicycle and ran to help the officers, hitting Redouane with a skateboard.

He was left with fatal stab wounds when the terrorists knifed him repeatedly.

In one particularly disturbing clip, CCTV from inside a nearby cafe, Mr Guenigault falls to the floor and is stabbed repeatedly as Mr Marques tries to drag him away.

All three men were able to continue up the road, stabbing at random, including one drinker who was knifed three times in the bank on the corner of Stoney Street, but managed to turn around and throw his pint at the men.

By this stage, brave onlookers had begun to challenge the terrorists by throwing chairs and other objects.

Their onslaught continued up the road and they were able to stab one woman in the El Pastor restaurant and two people hiding beneath tables in Elliot’s restaurant.

At the end of Stoney Street, staff had attempted to lock the doors to the Black & Blue bar and restaurant – but security footage showed Redouane and Butt viciously kicking it open.

By this stage, Butt had discarded a red jacket to reveal his Arsenal shirt and a fake suicide belt underneath. The removal of the red jacket would later lead police to believe a fourth attacker could be at large, due to disparities in witness descriptions.

Gasps were heard around the Old Bailey as high-quality footage was played of the terrorists squeezing through a glass door and squaring up to customer Roy Larner.

Redouane brandished his knife threateningly in Mr Larner’s face before suddenly stabbing him in the chest several times, with Zaghba joining in. Incredibly, Mr Larner survived.

Several other men were targeted in the restaurant, including Geoff Ho, a journalist who was stabbed in the neck after Butt ordered him to “lie down”.

The three terrorists were eventually shot dead by three armed police officers from the City of London police at 10.16pm. A stray bullet injured a man watching through a window of the Wheatsheaf pub opposite.

It emerged the terrorists were shot several more times while on the ground because police saw they were “still moving”.

Mr Hough said police “believed they were going to activate the explosive devices and fired further shots”.
