Powerful Nor’easter With Blizzard Conditions To Impact Mid-Atlantic to New England States Later Tuesday into Wednesday

I always wait a bit in order to iron out the details of such an event.  Models always make it seem like the world is going to end with these types of storms, however one needs to wait for pulling the alert flags out.  Do this look historic?  No … It does not.  However it looks like for this time of year it will be a heavy snowfall produce for areas near the coast, with blizzard conditions.  The entire area in red is where snow should fall from the system, but it does not mean that significant snow will fall across the red areas.

A Blizzard means that for three hours or more, visibility drops to 3/4 a mile or lower along with 35 mph wind gusts.  That is a blizzard.  It does not constitute the amount of snowfall in a storm system.  Many people mistake that term for how much snow will fall.

So to get into some details it looks like the pattern is set for this to happen.  A strong 500mb trough carved across the Eastern United States during this period, with a developing surface low due to the strong upper level jet moving into position.  This should ‘bomb’ (or deepen) the low rapidly off in the Atlantic, which will bring the blizzard conditions mainly overnight I’m thinking into Wednesday morning for much of the area, of course North Carolina/Virginia being first to be hit and spreading north-northeastward from there.

Heaviest snowfall zones only – If this trend is correct, the heaviest snowfall zones will be as followed and listed;
Southeast VA northeastward along the coast through DE/NJ and Long Island.  Now, given this track NYC would be spared the heaviest snowfall totals but it’s too far out to make that call.  The heavier totals spread into Southern New England from there … the highest totals will be surrounding the Boston, MA areas …
