Hurricane Norbert Heading To Southern California

Southern California Weather Central.com – This forecast was made back on August 15th for this event!  SCWC High Surf Warning has been issued for Tropical Storm Norbert that generate a strong southerly swell into Southern California that will up the high surf once again across the region with 20 foot waves being possible in the favored south facing beach locations.  Norbert will also bring dynamics for shower and thunderstorm activity into the region with a possible landfall, which hasn’t happened in our lifetimes.   The forecast for Sept/Oct/Nov across Southern California is for above average precipitation.  These months together you need 2.00″ of rainfall across the region to be over the average, which is just shy of that.  This could easily break the seasonal averages in some spots if it aims at us correctly. A southerly swell from a Southern Hemisphere storm + Tropical Storm Norbert will combine to bring high surf back to Southern California starting later Thursday and lasting through early next week.  This is a long period 18 second swell that could prove deadly to those that venture out there so only experienced surfers should be out there.

Waves will generally be a 7 feet, but 14 feet likely in favored south-southwest facing beaches like the Wedge in Orange County … and the real chance of seeing 20+ foot waves once again.  This is not out of the question.  The waves will be strongest over the weekend into Monday so this is a weekend for surfers to enjoy what they like to do … As always be careful and have fun …

Waves: 6-7 Feet with 14 foot possible and up to 20 feet in the favored areas.
Sea Height:  5-6 Feet from normal.
Tide:  Evening
Rip-tide danger:  High
Swell Direction:  South-Southwest
Swell Period:  18 seconds Thu/Sat with 12 seconds Sunday and Monday.

In addition to this wave event, Tropical Storm Norbert may make a curve into Southern California.  It could miss to the west, however some progs take this into San Diego … generating Tropical Storm Force Winds.  Some take it out to sea … but it will continue to be monitored.  Details for such an event are not available until I crunch the numbers … but the upper dynamics will favor widespread activity into the region.
