Arctic Blast To Bring Snowfall Sunday Through Tuesday Across Plains to Midwest

An arctic blast is going to bring snowfall (some areas heavy) through the early part of this next week, stretching from Montana to the Midwest and Michigan, as far south as Kansas.

Typhoon Yuri will influence the weather pattern across the United States.  A surface low will form on Sunday across Southeast Wyoming, moving into Northern Nebraska.  This will bring cold northerly flow into it and start the heavy snow-bands across Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota.  Over the later part of Sunday (likely overnight) into Monday the snowfall will increase across Southern Minnesota and into Central Wisconsin.

As the surface low moves further east, the northerly flow will bring lighter snowfall across the Eastern CO areas, stretching from there into the Northern half of Kansas and into extreme Northern Missouri, Iowa, and some of Northwest/Northern IL.  Heavier accumulations are not expected in the zones just listed, however across Eastern CO, Southern NE and some of Northern KS we may see brief heavy snowfall on Monday due to the sharp arctic front convergence.  Gusty winds may accompany this system and it will be evaluated further if needed.

Northern Michigan will see the most snowfall from this event due to lake effect snow.  The surface low on Tuesday will contribute heavy lake effect snow as the winds suck into it from the west-northwest off Lake Michigan.  Heavy accumulations are expected there, wouldn’t be surprised to see the first Lake Effect Snow Warnings in that area.  The lake effect snow machine will continue for most of the week due to the continued west-northwest flow off the lake.
