A very active polar jet will bring record below temperatures to much of the nation as you can see from all that purple on our model here at TriforceWeather.com for average temperature departure for the five day period forecast for.  The week is going to be below freezing across the entire United States except for the Southwest, with shots of snow into the Oregon/Washington areas as well.  Keep reading on for you region’s detailed outlook, which is released every Sunday afternoon/evening on our site, our app, and our Facebook Page.

Pacific Northwest – The Pacific Northwest will have some interesting weather coming up this next week.  No doubt the arctic air will fill into the area as far south as Eugene, Oregon, covering Portland, Seattle, and Spokane to Boise with arctic air for a way below seasonal average temperature outlook.  As for the precipitation, this is where it gets interesting.  The upper level low west of the area will mix into the arctic air and this is when snowfall may very well be possible for Northern Oregon into Washington as well, including the High Desert areas of Central/Eastern Portland (Bend as well).  This will be something to watch and will be a focus on this website for our team of forecasters.  The event would be Wednesday night into Thursday.  Regardless of the chance of wintry weather, the Northwest Washington areas into B.C. and Vancouver Island, Canada looks to have record below average precipitation so here comes your dry spell, opposite of many weeks before this.

California – California will be split with average precipitation for the most part across the North, and below to record below for the South.  Storm systems will miss the southern half of California through the week with mainly nothing to speak of weatherwise.  Precipitation increasing for the northern half of California by Wednesday night into Thursday, which should be the only storm system for this forecast period.  It will not bring any concerns weatherwise that needs additional monitoring.

Northern Plains – The plains will have way below normal temperatures as the arctic blast polar vortex sets in.  Given the time of year, records will be broken in terms of sub-freezing temperatures.  Shots of light snow will be possible with any isolated snow showers within this air-mass, but no major storm systems are on the scope.  It will be drier than average after the snowfall that is falling today and tomorrow, which does not count on this forecast because this forecast is from Tuesday to Sunday.

Central Plains – Arctic front will blast through the area, leaving the entire area with record cold temperatures.  Scattered snow showers will be possible through the week, with the most concentration in the Rocky Mountain areas.  No major storm systems are on the scope.  It will be drier than average after the snowfall that is falling today and tomorrow, which does not count on this forecast because this forecast is from Tuesday to Sunday.

Southern Plains – Oklahoma and Texas for the most part will be below average in precipitation, however you will not escape the arctic front as it will bring well below temperatures through the week.  Again, no major storm systems seem likely as it will be uneventful for this zone.  The exception possibly being Southern TX later in the week with a developing system on the arctic front, which could bring precipitation to that area, a reason for our much above average precipitation shade in extreme Southern Texas.

Midwest –  or the most part will be below average in precipitation, however you will not escape the arctic front as it will bring well below temperatures through the week.  Snowfall is possible across some of the IA areas on Tuesday on the backside of Winter Storm Brett, but it will not do much to dent averages for precipitation, which for the most part is around average.

Great Lakes States – This period starts on Tuesday so Winter Storm Brett will be across the Wisconsin and Michigan areas at the time so what we’re seeing is above average precipitation (snowfall).  The area with the most precipitation will be much above average for this week and that would be Northern Michigan and some of the Central Upper Peninsula, all in part due to the strong lake-effect wind generating higher lake-effect snow totals this week.  Other than that, below average precipitation across IL/IN/OH under drier flow in the area, however it will be arctic cold out there so that you will not escape.

Southeast – The southeast will for the most part this week remain dry, with a weak front moving in on Tuesday through the KY/TN/MS/AL areas, washing you (weakening) before hitting GA/SC/NC, a reading for the drier than average forecast on the map in this article.  Now the reason for the above average area from LA/MS/AL, NW GA into the Appalachians is because a disturbance toward the weekend out of Southern Texas may generate precipitation along a stationary boundary.  So that’ll be the next chance of good precipitation.  Other than that expect the arctic front to make temperature below average across the area, with the exception of the coastal areas of NC/SC/GA and of course most of FL as the temperatures will be average on those coasts and above average in Florida.

Mid-Atlantic – The Mid-Atlantic will be hit by the arctic front and all areas there will be below to way below average in cold temperatures.  Given the dry flow, expecting much below average precipitation conditions for this area.  Some increases in snow however is possible by the end of the week.

Northeast – Storm systems impacting Northern Maine looks likely, but for the most part the area will be below average in precipitation.  Toward end week, the area will get a chance of snowfall as a storm from the south grazes the area.  Arctic temperatures spread the entire area this week.  No major storms during this period.

Canada – Canada will have drier than normal and colder than normal conditions for the most part for the West/Central sections.  However, on the Eastern areas, including New Foundland, expecting above average precipitation as storms lift out of the Great Lakes into Canada through Maine and New Brunswick.  This week will be record below in terms of temperatures and precipitation across a lot of Western Canada, including Vancouver Island, which has been hit by many storms over the last 2-3 week period.
