Ten people have been killed in an explosion in a tourist district of the Turkish city of Istanbul, officials have said.
Ambulances were said to have rushed to the Sultanahmet Square, next to the city’s famous Blue Mosque landmark, where the blast was reported.
The blast went off at 10.20am, local time, according to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet
Police have sealed off the scene, which is near an obelisk in the area that is on the site of the ancient Roman hippodrome.
Images from the scene appear to show several bodies on the ground.
Istanbul governor’s office said at least 15 other people have been injured.
A statement from the office said: ”Investigations into the cause of the explosion, the type of explosion and perpetrator or perpetrators are underway.”
Turkey’s Dogan news agency reported that at least six Germans, one Norwegian and one Peruvian were among the wounded.
Seoul’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, told reporters that one South Korean had a finger injury.
It is not known if any foreigners are among the dead.
State run TRT TV station said a suicide bomber is thought to have carried out the attack.
No group has claimed responsibility, but Turkey has been the scene of numerous acts of terrorism in the past, including several claimed by al Qaeda-linked groups and Islamic State.
Turkey has been part of the coalition fighting IS in Syria since 2014, but is also conducting military operations against Kurdish groups it regards as terrorists.
Unnamed Turkish security officials told the Reuters news agency that they suspected IS militants were responsible.
