More 'Sky Sounds': Mysterious Booms Plague Wisconsin Towns

‘No feasible explanation’ for loud disturbances waking residents at night

The story of the mysterious “sky sounds” just got stranger, as one town in the U.S. is struggling to sleep through nerve-rattling baning. On at least 3 different nights now, residents of Clintonville, Wisconsin [map] have been awakened by a succession of loud booms.

City officials say they have no explanation. However, USGS issued a statement on Thursday saying a 1.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Clintonville on Tuesday. Is that the cause of the sounds, a symptom of the booming noises, or totally unrelated?

Some residents said they had been hearing loud noises for several weeks, but the bangs were only occasional. The sounds at the time were dismissed, with residents figuring the noise was coming from the Seagrave Fire Apparatus plant, where fire engines and pumping equipment is manufactured.

This week, however, the booming was different.

“It almost felt like a heavy duty thunderstorm, but it was shaking though,” said resident Al Miller.

“And we both just started searching the house,” said resident Lindsay Pockat.

“Around 3:30 a.m. all hell broke loose. The booms were coming one right after another,” said Shari Pfeiler as she sat on her front stoop next to her daughter Jordan. “The cats were freaking out.”

According to various accounts from residents, the strange disturbance sounds like distant thunder, fireworks or someone slamming a heavy door. At first, many people were amused or merely curious. But after three restless nights, aggravation is mounting. And some folks are considering leaving town until investigators determine the source of the racket.

“My husband thought it was cool, but I don’t think so. This is not a joke,” said Jolene Van Beek, according to an AP story at Boston.com. She says the booming woke her up, and shook the entire house. “I don’t know what it is, but I just want it to stop.”

City administrator Lisa Kuss said the booms have roused people from their beds and into the streets – some in pajamas. “It startled everyone. They thought something had hit their house or a tree fell on their roof,” Kuss said Wednesday.

On at least one night, police dispatcher took more than 30 calls from concerned residents between 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

“To me, it just seems like the most logical explanation is some earth-moving, geological thing,” Kuss said. “But then why is it not happening elsewhere? It’s hard to believe my little city is geographically different than the rest of the world.”

But there is a connection between the city of Clintonville and “the rest of the world.” Sky sounds have been waking entire cities for at least a year now. The phenomena of sky sounds have been variously reported as sounding like machinery, churning noises, rusty horns, a loud hum, or odd banging.

Recent media accounts of the strange sky sounds include reports from cities all over the world. According to CNN News, U.S. Geological Survey scientist David Hill had published a paper in 2011 asking: “What is That Mysterious Booming Sound?”
