“At first, I though it was diesel,” the boat pilot said, preferring to remain unnamed. “It also smells like asphalt or tar, what we put on houses when we put the roof on.”

The others on the boat agreed that the foul chemical was so “thick” and strong, they felt they were “tasting” it.

Asphalt or tar smell is indicative of petroleum, and its by-products. Natural gas & Methane are odorless, but are associated with petroleum.
