Osama bin Laden killed: live coverage

Follow live coverage of the aftermath of Osama bin Laden’s death, as new documents from bin Laden’s compound reveal planned al-Qaeda attack on 9/11 anniversary.

Latest

07:25 This opinion piece in Ha’aretz claims bin Laden was assassinated for “a fistful of votes”.

Obama is allowing American conservatives and their allies everywhere (including “our” prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu ) to preach in favor of official terror as the only way to stop liberation movements the world over.

06:46 Dawn, the leading Pakistan daily, reports on proposals by some hardliners in the US legislature to cut off aid to Pakistan. The report quotes Congressman Ted Poe, a Texas Republican as saying “Unless Pakistan can prove that they were not providing sanctuary for America’s number one enemy, they should not receive any American aid.”

But another Republican, Sen. Lindsey Graham, warned the House not to make any hasty decisions about Pakistan. “You cannot trust them and you cannot abandon them,” he said. The West’s dilemma over Pakistan in a nutshell.

06:30 Australia’s news.com.au website has quite an entertaining round up of the latest conspiracy theories surrounding bin Laden’s death.

06:15 Thomas Harding, our Defence Correspondent reports today about fears that top secret stealth technology taken from the US helcopter that crashed during the raid could end up in China sparking a diplomatic row. Thomas explains that experts believe the aircraft, which was only partially blown up as the Americans departed bin Laden’s compund, bore the hall marks of a highly sophisticated new form prototype. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army are understood to be in the process of developing their own stealth helicopter and could benefit greatly from information gleaned from the downed US chopper.

05:59 The seemingly-modified Black Hawk stealth helicopter which crashed into the Bin Laden compound, leaving behind a vital piece of its tail fin, was downed by an air vortex caused by unexpectedly warm air, according to US officials. It was not shot down, they added, and there was no mechanical failure.

Officials briefed by Vice Admiral William McRaven, leader of the Joint Special Operations Command, said the chopper lost “lift” because it entered a “vortex” caused by hot air and the compound’s 18ft-high walls, which blocked the downward thrustcaused by the rotor blades from dispersing.

05:45 Sohaib Athar, the man who inadvertanly live tweeted the raid on bin Laden’s compound, has put together this handy FAQ for anyone who is interested in his story. Worth a read.

05:31 More on the SEALS: Peta, the publicity-hungry animal rights activists, have sent the team that took part a box of “Bin Laden Bites“, vegan chocolate squares stamped with pictures of the erstwhile terrorist.

According to Peta, bin Laden earned the hatred of animal rights supporters everywhere by gassing his son’s two dogs in a chemical-warfare experiment. No word on whether the SEALS have eaten the vegan treats.

05:15 After his visit to Ground Zero, Barack Obama will today visit Fort Campbell in Kentucky to address several military units recently returned from Afghanistan. He will also meet members of the SEAL team that conducted the Bin Ladenraid, according to the White House.

05:02 Sohaib Athar, the Pakistani computer programmer who inadvertently live-tweeted the attack on Bin Laden’s compound, hasposted a mobile phone video of the compound burning on Youtube.

04:51 US Major General Richard Mills, who has just returned from a tour commanding the Marines in southern Afghanistan, has said one-eyed Taliban leader Mullah Omar should be “worried” and that the killing of Bin Laden would unsettle Afghan insurgents. He said the raid showed the US never quit its missions.

“Once we have targeted you, we’re going to maintain our focus on you until the mission’s accomplished. If I was Mullah Omar, I would certainly be worried.”

04:42 More on the Navy SEALS who carried out the raid. According to the Army Times the SEALS were drawn from Naval Special Warfare Development Group’s Red Squadron.

DevGru, as it is usually known, is a “Tier 1″ special mission unit, the Navy equivalent of the Army’s Delta Force. DevGru contains four line squadrons: Blue, Gold, Red and Silver and it also has a strategic reconnaissance element named Black squadron. The Red team was picked because it was ready at headquarters for tasking.

04:34 There has been a security scare in Washington DC after letters containing a white powder turned up at 29 schools across the city. The letters had “AL AQEDA-FBI” written on them and were mailed from Dallas, Texas. The FBI investigated but the powder was found to be harmless. It is thought to have been cornstarch.

04:22 Republicans warming up for the primaries have attacked Barack Obama’s overall leadership on national security, despite the killing of bin Laden.

In a debate in South Carolina broadcast live on Fox News, 50-year-old Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, said that while President Obama had done “a good job” with the mission, the raid was not the “sum total” of his record and he had been lacking in other areas.

04:09 Away from Abbottabad, suspected Islamist militants have opened fire on a group of Pakistani Shias in the southwestern town of Quetta, killing at least 8 and wounding 10, Reuters reports.

Police official Hamid Shakil said the Shias were in a neighbourhood park when they were shot at.

03:35 Nick Allen in Los Angeles writes:

Rudy Giuliani just made a good point about partisanship in US politics. After spending face time with President Obama in New York, Mr Giuliani said he found himself liking the president more and developing a ‘heightened respect’ for him. They not only discussed the bin Laden raid but also the fortunes of the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox baseball teams, and of course golf “which we both love.” It all sounds very pally, just two guys shooting the breeze. Mr Giuliani said such personal chit-chat between Democrats and Republicans is “missing” on Capitol Hill. He believes America would benefit if the politicians in Washington took a bit of time out from bickering to share a cigar or a drink together. Maybe Mr Obama could play more golf with Republicans, and occasionally let them win.

02:55 The United States ran a CIA post in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad where Osama bin Laden was found, operating a team of spies for surveillance of the compound where he was found, the Washington Post reports.

Citing US officials, the Post said the clandestine safe house run by the Central Intelligence Agency, was used for the supremely delicate task of gathering intelligence in the city.

The network relied on local informants and other sources to piece together a “pattern of life” in the compound where the al-Qaeda chief had been living in secrecy in a compound surrounded by towering perimeter walls, the Post said.

02:41 Here is the New York Times’s take on how data seized during the raid links bin Laden to new terrorism plots.

02:34 A retired New York sergeant who had the car licence plate “GETOSAMA” is trading it in for one that reads “GOTOSAMA.” Arno Herwerth, 46, had to fight a court battle to get the original plate in 2007 because officials said it could be viewed as derogatory to a particular ethnic group. The Department of Motor Vehicles said there should be no problem approving the new plate.

02:20 Pakistan has ordered its lobbyists in Washington into action to counter allegations that the country sheltered bin Laden and knew where he was. Pakistan pays $900,000 (£600,000) a year to lobbyists in the US capital, Reuters reports. They have been on Capitol Hill every day since bin Laden was killed talking to senators and congressman and trying to exonerate Pakistan.

01:59 The death of Osama bin Laden has eclipsed the royal wedding in terms of media coverage, according to a study by Global Language Monitor. It has already reached 84 million mentions in global print and electronic media. The royal wedding is on 63 million. By this measurement bin Laden’s death is already the third biggest story of the 21st Century. The biggest, since January 2000, is the economic and political rise of China with 300 million mentions, followed by the election of Barack Obama with 123 million.

01.00 Bill Richardson, the high profile former Governor of New Mexico, is the latest to enter the debate about the use of “Geronimo” as a codename for the bin Laden operation. The Apache leader operated in what became New Mexico. Mr Richardson said: “They could have picked a better name. In Native American circles, he’s revered.” Mr Richardson said he did not believe US forces necessarily owed an apology, but should offer an “explanation.”

00.24 Sources involved in the operation to get bin Laden tell Fox News that the al-Qaeda leader appeared “scared and completely confused” and acted in a “cowardly” manner moments before he was shot. He shoved his wife towards the Navy Seal who then shot him. An AK-47 and a Makarov handgun were within the terrorist’s reach, the report said.

00.20 More on reports of a 10th anniversary train plot. An FBI and Department of Homeland Security bulletin obtained by ABC News says: “As of February 2010, al-Qaeda was allegedly contemplating conducting an operation against trains at an unspecified location in the United States on the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001. As one option, al-Qaeda was looking into trying to tip a train by tampering with the rails so that the train would fall off the track at either a valley or a bridge.” The US Government referred to it as “alleged plotting” and said there was “no information of any imminent terrorist threat.”

23.44 A fascinating titbit on the raid from CNN’s well connected Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr. Apparently one of the ways the Navy Seals sought to positively identify bin Laden was his height. However, a vital piece of equipment was missing. So, after shooting him dead, one of the Seals lay down next to bin Laden’s body so they could ascertain how tall the dead man was.

23.35 William J Bennett, Washington fellow of the Claremont Institute and US secretary of education in the 1980s, argues for release of a bin Laden death photo. He says:

The argument that we should not release the photos in the hope that it will calm violence against innocents is to grant jihadists a veto on our public policy, and it is a veto that can never be satisfied, that will never be powerful enough. We should not defer our rights and liberties and policies to the threats of madmen, nihilists or fascists.

23.26 CNN reporting that information found at bin Laden’s compound suggested al-Qaeda had wanted to carry out a “spectacular” attack on trains in the US on September 11, 2011, the tenth anniversary of the original attacks.
