Mayor Bloomberg: Don't Call WTC Site 'Ground Zero' Anymore

Now that the 9/11 memorial museum is set to open and the Freedom Tower is climbing into the sky, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg says it’s time to stop calling the area “Ground Zero” and celebrate the comeback of lower Manhattan instead.

“We will never forget the devastation of the area that came to be known as Ground Zero. Never. But the time has come to call those 16 acres what they are: The World Trade Center and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum,” said Bloomberg in a speech from the area.

It’s the preamble to a weekend of ceremonies leading up to the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and the aborted flight in Pennsylvania.

Invited guests are to commemorate the tragedy in a semi-public ceremony on Sunday, September 11, 2011, and the public will be let in to the site at its official opening next Monday, September 12th.

But Mayor Bloomberg wants to draw attention away from the painful memories of that fateful day and instead focus on the rejuvenation of the area in the 10 years since that fateful day a decade ago…
