The song says ‘…When you’re smilin’,…The whole world smiles with you‘.  Guess these news anchors in Texas never heard the Louis Armstrong rendition of that song.

The FOX news anchors were reporting on the viral video of Micheal Brown who landed 20…count them…TWENTY!…full scholarships from Princeton, Harvard, Yale and 17 additional top-tier colleges.  If this were the Olympics…Michael won the gold, silver and bronze medals in academics.  Impressive, right?

Well not to these FOX 5 anchors who asked, “Don’t you think it’s a little ridiculous this kid applied to 20 [colleges], basically wait-listing another kid.” Oh, you’ve got to listen to the broadcast to really appreciate the hate…

I’ve seen snarky anchors, tone deaf anchors and clueless anchors, but these three take the cake.  I can now add ‘petty anchors’ to the list.  Really? Can’t we celebrate with this Micheal Brown who has a future when another young man named Michael Brown was about the same age when he was gunned down by Ferguson Missouri police.  When a Black teen (or any Black for that matter) can be shown in a negative light, mainstream media tells us every hour on the hour about those events. But when Blacks accomplish the undeniably awesome and awe-inspiring then they  find a negative spin to try and dour the excitement.

Well, we’re not here for the the haters, we’re here to celebrate with  Micheal.

The Mirabeau B. Lamar High School student was pretty much the toast of his hometown of Houston.  Micheal reportedly has maintained a 4.68 GPA and scored a whopping 1540 on his SAT.  Micheal told CNN “It’s something I’m proud of because I see my hard work paying off, determination paying off, sacrifices paying off“.

This young man should be an inspiration to every student and teacher out there.  There will be plenty more heartbreaking stories to come about teens who tragically lose their lives or lose their hope, but for one brief moment, let’s just celebrate the accomplishment of  a teen who went against the sterotypes and defied the odds.   His grades tell us that Micheal has learned a lot, but let’s chalk today’s lesson up to life lessons…and that lesson is that no matter how high you climb, there will always be some who try to bring you down.  Fortunately, Micheal is soaring too high to see those petty little anchors on the ground.
