Communities Face Superfund Fight in Tucson
Just outside of Tucson, Arizona, a massive plume of polluted groundwater extends over ten square miles. It has been there for decades, with the site first making it onto the Superfund list in 1983. There may never be definitive proof that the site has made multiple generations of Tucson residents sick, but the evidence is accumulating. Linda Robles, one local organizer, can count a number of tragic illnesses in her family, including two daughters with cancer and a grandchild born with kidney problems. The plume that her family lives near is mostly composed of trichloroethylene (TCE), a chemical used as an industrial solvent that the EPA has said can cause cancer.
The site has been undergoing cleanup and remediation for decades, and though levels of pollutants have decreased at certain areas of the site, the contamination is still widespread. The EPA states that community members are not currently being exposed to Superfund pollutants, but the long legacy of pollution and the health problems that the contaminated groundwater may have caused cannot be undone. However, Linda Robles and others in her community are fighting back. They are organizing a community group in Tucson, demanding answers and speaking out against the wrongs they have suffered. The site may never be fully remediated, but hopefully the community members nearby will find some relief from the injustices they have endured.
