Police Officer Arrested for Possession of Stolen Property

When it is said that the police are here to “serve and protect”, that is certainly not in reference to people and property, but rather to the edicts of the state.

Police do not serve and protect property, or the rights of individuals, but they do serve and protect the control system that employs them.  In fact it is extremely common, if not an everyday occurrence for police to violate rights and steal property.

Just recently in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a police officer was arrested for possession of stolen property.

Valentin Lucero of Cop Block writes:

“Unfortunately, it looks as though Albuquerque Police Department in New Mexico is in the news again. This time, one of Albuquerque Police officers was arrested for possession of stolen property in excess of $500.00. Officer Daniel Burge is a seven year veteran of the Albuquerque Police Department. He has been on leave since the beginning of December pending the outcome of an investigation. The investigation stems from the home of another officer being burglarized back in January.

Police received a tip that Officer Burge was involved and had a TV that was stolen from the home. They could not prove that the TV in question was the one that was stolen since the serial number had been scratched off, until the original owner remembered that it had identifying scratch marks on the side. The marks matched and Officer Burge was arrested. The investigation is still ongoing and more arrests could be made in the days to come.”

Some would argue that this is some kind of isolated incident, but it is a fact that crimes like this are incredibly under reported because police are above the law and very difficult to bring complaints against.

Overall, protection services are a necessary part of a civilized society, however, most governments in the world currently maintain a monopoly over this service, encouraging corruption and poor service.  This problem can be solved by removing the compulsory funding that police departments enjoy and opening the market up to friendly competition.
