In its Business section on Sunday 21 March, the New York Times noted the explosion of bartering in the midst of the economic crisis.
The paper reports that barter ads on Craigslist have more than doubled in the past two years, with 200,000 new barter ads per month.
Ithaca Hours provide an expanded way to barter. Rather than having to construct a two-way trade with only one other person or business, you can earn Hours in a transaction with any of hundreds of members, then spend them with any other.
Hours even pays you to start. Pay the annual membership fee of $10, and get $20 worth of Hours, plus a listing for the goods or service you offer.
The Times says what Hours has been saying for years: “The appeal is clear: via bartering, consumers can use their time, skills and possessions instead of money to obtain goods and services like piano lessons, dental work and dog training – and to meet new people along the way.”
