A friend of mine in China says the Chinese government is encouraging citizens to hold at least 5% of their savings in gold. Frankly with the Chinese and other Asians I know (including my Thai wife), there is little encouragement needed to hold gold. About 9 months ago we were assisting a Chinese client of ours to procure financing to buy a substantial interest in an Australia gold producer because of her partners commitment to gold. This group is not unusual from other Chinese investors with whom we have worked. Of course, the Indians are very enthusiastic about gold. My Aussie friends tell me they understand how the USA will solve its debt crisis — they will devalue and default. So I think the ruling elites will have a difficult time if they believe the 3+ billion of us “hicks” in Asia are so stupid to fall for their world fiat currency. As the saying goes, “we may have been born yesterday but we were not born last night.”
