After 40 days, get some sleep, Tyler Shields.

From Dateline Zero – It’s said that the brain and body are affected by lack of sleep in a similar manner to drinking heavily. Reading what Tyler Shields is going through, he could well be describing a 40-day drinking binge. Peeing all the time, headaches, inability to think clearly.

It’s not a bender, though. Tyler Shields is seeking the world record for most days without sleep. As I write this, he is probably sleeping — having gone 40 solid days without.

The 28-year-old Los Angeles photographer wanted to set a record that wouldn’t be broken. The record had been less than 20 days.

Shields keeps a wildly irregular sleep schedule anyway, going on little sleep or sleeping during the day — or going a day with no sleep. So he hoped that would give him an edge. But this is harder and more painful than he imagined; and he says his experience isn’t something he would wish on anybody.

“The struggling really started on day 25,” he said to AOL News, at day #38. “I got a pretty bad fever out of nowhere. I ate like 50 Popsicles and the fever broke, but it came back on day 27 and I hit 103, 104, 105 degrees. When I hit 104 I sent my assistants to get bags of ice and I sat in the bathtub until it went down.”
