Crying wolf: recent terror threats an ‘October surprise’?

As I write this, top center of Drudge Reportreads: “5 EU AIRPORTS TARGETED FOR ‘COMMANDO-LIKE ATTACK’.”

These terror warnings have been building for some time, but nonetheless there is some skepticism as to the true reason for this anti-terror action. It’s apparently believed that these threat levels are (at least partly) a scheme launched by politicians to influence U.S. elections.

Why other countries around the world would raise terror warnings to help the U.S. political class is beyond me. In case you cannot tell, I tend to be more than a little skeptical of everyone — including other skeptics.

However, I do think this case illustrates the widespread distrust of politicians. Generally speaking, there are a lot of people who don’t believe the political class when they say “we want to use this power to protect you.” Moreover, these people don’t even trust these politicians when they say “there’s plenty to fear.”

I would dare say that the government is seen as the greater threat. This distrust of government isn’t without reason. The politicians are clearly not operating in a “politicians work for We The People” kinda environment. Rather, they are operating in a “we own you” environment.
