Human hearts with couples’ photos pinned to them found in cemetery

From Dateline Zero – A maintenance worker at a San Mateo County, California, cemetery made a gruesome discovery when he found two human hearts inside jars pinned with the photographs of two different young couples.

The jars were found sticking out of the ground at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery is the oldest and largest Cemetery in “the city of cemeteries,” Colma, California.

Coroner’s officials say the hearts contained embalming fluid and must have come from dead bodies. Police are now trying to determine the couples’ identities and where the organs came from. They’re also trying to determine whether the display is related to some sort of ritual or is simply a prank.

According to the article at KTLA, “Cmdr. Jon Read tells the San Mateo County Times the investigation is leaning toward a ritual involving Santeria, an Afro-Caribbean religion combining traditional African beliefs with Catholicism.”

No gravesites or internments were found to be disrupted in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Read said. Colma police reached out to other agencies throughout San Mateo County to find possible disturbed graves or internments, but none have turned up yet, he said.

“Police are entertaining the possibility that the hearts came from a neighboring county or perhaps farther away,” Cmdr. Read said,according to SFAppeal.com. They are also working to find the identities of the two young couples.

“It’s a little bit perplexing right now” because two people were depicted in each photo attached to the single hearts, Read said.
