What if the Moon disappeared?

This article could provide some excellent material for a writer wanting to pen a disaster story.

What I didn’t expect to learn is that the human race could, according to the article, survive if the Earth stopped spinning (especially if it was a gradual slow-down to a stop). Depending on how the Earth’s orbit was altered, that could be a survivable disaster as well — although it would be extremely dicey. (The Earth getting flung into the sun, or far outside the solar system would probably mean the doom of the human race, though.)
