Yet, their goal seems to be to weaken what has been referred to as “news aggregating” websites as “one change that primarily affects sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content.” This clearly describes many sites that present alternative news. , Even Mainstream media News which is largely copied and syndicated through their own agreements. However, plenty of alternative news sites and blogs have original material which they freely share, in part or in full, purely to support one another in disseminating the truth. This is of key importance to spread information in the absence of government or foundation funding, as enjoyed by much of the mainstream media. It is also a counter to censorship, so that a free market of ideas can flourish where people can investigate facts for themselves, rather than have opinions dictated downstream from a limited number of sources.
Senator Requests Google Investigation - NSA Censorship
Mainstream Media alluded to the formal Letter filed by Senator Michael S. Lee regarding Google antitrust violations on Saturday March 12th 2011. This request for antitrust investigation follows on the heals of accusations filed last year by the Texas Attorney General’s office.
“There is no question that Google is capable of manipulating markets that it may consider competition. I have seen the manipulation of their quality score component first hand. “Quality Score” is an essential element that Google uses to assess pricing for its Pay Per Click or Sponsored Ads products.” Steve Marshall, a silicon valley marketing SEM consultant told the Texas Attorney General’s investigation team on a phone call. “The threat is real, and should be taken seriously. Unfortunately, the concepts tend to be fairly technical, and complex to prove in court, but more and more business are becoming empowered with the tech savvy to present the necessary evidence to prove antitrust violations on the part of Google.” Steve went on to say.
There are other concerns around Google’s relationship with the NSA which include not only the spying on its users and passing user information to the NSA, but the potential of the reciprocal duty to block and censor results displayed to users that the US government believes might be threatening to some abstract agenda. Significant traffic impacts have been felt recently from numerous internet businesses surrounding a recent “organic” algorithm change, allegedly targeting “content farms”, which are sites that share or borrow content, basically duplicating stories for the purpose of exploiting Google’s natural ranking algorithm.
According to a recent cheerleading article by TechCrunch, content farms indeed include websites post any duplicate content word-for-word, “Now, finally, it sounds like they’re going to do more to take on sites that just repurpose content from other sites (hopefully including the countless sites that repost TechCrunch articles verbatim).”
