Real Life Superheroes continue to perform heroic deeds in your city

Dateline Zero — Many local cities are struggling with massive budget shortfalls; and among other services, policing can get hit with crippling budget cuts. There are many reasons for this, including local economies having trouble, to dependence on handouts from the Federal Government, which is having its own trouble.

So what to do about local crime prevention? Cuts in police budgets reminds people where responsibility for crime prevention has always been: me and you. We all have a responsibility to watch out for ourselves and our neighbors as best as we are able. Those can do more, should.

Some of us lock our doors and windows at night. Others join neighborhood watch programs.

And some folks feel called to become real-life superheroes.

This is something I’ve written about before. November of last year I wrote “Real-Life Superheroes Could Be Defending Your City While You Sleep.” At the time, real life superheroes were spreading steadily, with entire groups of superheroes organizing in some cities; and local police departments being told to familiarize themselves with respective superhero communities.

The superhero trend is continuing to grow, with the help of news coverage and the internet. Graza news had a recent feature, Jim Brasher of Yahoo News did an article and posted a video feature, and there’s even a documentary on the way. Therefor, expect the superhero culture to grow.

A real-life Wonder Woman

A superhero named Nyx spoke with Grazia: “With the police facing cuts of 20 per cent, crime rates are expected to soar. Yet when this happened in New York, ordinary people decided to take Neighbourhood Watch to the next level. Here, Irene Thomas, 22 – accountant by day, crimefighter by night – explains why ‘Wonder Woman’ could be coming to a street near you soon.”

“If you happen to look out of your window and catch sight of me – dressed all in black, a mask covering my face – you’d never guess by day I’m actually an accountant who likes shopping, movies and sushi,” she writes. “To my colleagues, I’m just Irene from accounts who dyes her hair red, gossips about TV shows and dreams about getting a bigger apartment.”

“Yet for one night a week, after dinner, I transform into NYX, Greek goddess of night – a real-life superhero, fighting crime and helping those in need. To date, I’ve called the police to countless bar fights, provided evidence that helped convict drug dealers and fed hundreds of homeless people on the street of New York – all in costume.”
