The origin of planets

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

“All things that began must come to an end some time,” said that science teacher whose name I barely remember. She said that stars, planets, solar system, everything would end someday. But, I did not know the beginning. It was liberating to finally read the tale of the beginning of those planets.
Like all other kids, I too never gave much thought to the beginning. While my friends were looking forward to the future, I looked at the beginning. It was not for some deep thirst for knowledge that I researched about the planets. I just wanted to know how we understood it all.

The prominent theory: nebular hypothesis
Ask any kid in your neighborhood, they might know how planets began. But when a German philosopher named Immanuel Kant, in 1755, first proposed that planets are born from discs of dust and gas (nebulae) orbiting their home stars, people ignored him.
After more than 250 years, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope confirmed that Kant’s theory was right all along. Located 10.5 light years away from Earth, was the Sun-like star, Epsilon Eridani, that had an object orbiting it. Hubble found out that this object is, in fact, a planet. Thus Kant’s theory became a prominent one.
But there was a problem with this theory. Kant’s theory contradicted with the theory that Sun contains most of the solar system’s mass and only a fraction of its angular momentum. Also, they argue that if the rings of matter were split off, planet formation wouldn’t happen at all.
Studying planet formation

Space telescopes like Hubble, Planck, Herschel and XMM-Newton monitor and gather evidence on the origin of stars, planets and the universe itself. The James Webb Space Telescope is set to succeed Hubble. It is another big step for humanity.
Our Sun is a middle aged one, about 4.5 billion years old, and the disk of debris dissipated long ago. But, Epsilon Eridani is a young one, only 800 million years old. The disk of debris around Epsilon Eridani is still visible to the scientists. Scientists believe that this Sun-like star can help us find the origin of planets.
The future remains a secret. What was considered to be a miracle once, is a kid’s toy these days. We live in interesting times. What do you think?
