The Voyager probe

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I suppose I have been talking about the end of the solar system for some time. So, why not talk about the probes sent to study our solar system and interstellar space. The ‘Grand Tour’ project might have been destroyed by those NASA budget cuts, but Voyager is something better.
The Voyager probes gave us insight into the two most biggest planets Jupiter and Saturn and their moons. After more than 33 years, many of the probe’s scientific instruments have partially failed; some are fully inactive. It will reach the heliopause in 2015.

The Grand tour

It was in the 1960s that Gary Flandro, of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, first proposed a Grand tour to study the outer planets. NASA began the work on this mission in the early 1970s. But the budget cuts threw everything out of the window in 1972.
The planetary alignment was perfect and the Grand tour program could have exploited this. Still, much of the elements in this program were added to the Voyager series. And that made it more interesting to research.

Voyager space probe

Voyager one is an American space probe launched by NASA on September 5, 1977. It was sent to the study the outer solar system and interstellar space. It is the farthest man made object from Earth.
Voyager 1′s sister Voyager 2, is also tasked to study more about the interstellar space.Even after 33 years, Voyager transmits data back to the Deep Space Network and accepts routine commands.

Voyager 2′s primary mission was to study the Jovian system in 1979 and the Saturnian system in 1980. This was the first probe to give us detailed images of the two largest planets and their moons. They successfully did that job.

The interesting thing about this program is that each Voyager space probe carry a golden record for any intelligent lifeforms that might bump into them in the outer space.

The record has got photos of the Earth and its lifeforms; a medley called “Sounds of Earth” which includes the sounds of whales, babies, waves, a variety of music; the spoken greetings from the Secretary-General of the UN, President of the United States and the children of our planet.

In 1990, Voyager 1 took the image (family portrait) of our solar system from the outside. It will study the interstellar space for another 13 years or so.

These probes were sent to do a specific set of missions. They are still on those missions, receiving commands for new objectives.
