Immortality - A Soon To Be Reality?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Recently a lot of media attention has been paid to apparently wild claims of some scientists regarding possible human immortality. These researchers claim that with new biotechnological advances the human aging could be defeated in the near future, and that we could stay healthy and vigorous for many more years.

Is it simply hype and wishful thinking or are we on the verge of possibly the greatest bio technological evolutionary step?

Perhaps there just  may be something here, that deserves careful consideration for possible serious investments and philanthropic support?
In this initiative we suggest to establish a network of qualified impartial scientists who will carefully review and evaluate the existing claims and supporting evidence for feasibility of life-extension. A team of experts will study not only the media reports, but also the original scientific publications and evaluate their scientific merit.

As we are right now, our “consciousness”, our sense of self, is of a physical body, with a cellular structure. With difficult psychological work on oneself, one may be able to create a second body, called a “soul” by various religions, that can live much, much longer than the physical body. We are not given a soul when we are born, it must be created BY THE PERSON who is to have one. The soul has a molecular nature, rather than cellular. It can go anywhere air can go, including, obviously, inside other bodies, since all animal life forms breathe. Thus, we could live other peoples lives by entering into their physical body.

With continued work on oneself, one might eventually develop a body with an electronic structure to it, called a “spirit” by various religions. An electronic body is essentially a body of light. Since light actually IS indestructable, omnipresent and eternal, so would a persons spirit. Of course, this means ones sense of self is a part of that body. [A cellular body is basically a body of water. A soul is basically a body of air (“I come like water and like the wind I go” Omar Khayyam). They have different venues. A body of light can leave the galaxy.

We can know, to a certain extent, what type of work we need to do to grow a soul. But the creation of a spirit is much more subtle and little is known. The ideas are so outside of our experience that they appear magical or religious to ordinary thinking.

Raymond Kurzweil is one of the most prolific inventors and futurists; he’s the one who developed text to speech synthesis and a synthesizer that develops and even creates poetry, among others. He has also predicted new technologies that would appear and some directions that our society would take, and he got it right.
Now, the 61 year old claims that considering the rate at which our understanding of our genes and nanotechnology is increasing, scientists should be able to replace many (if not all) of our vital organs in approximately 20 years from now. When confronted and asked if that’s not a bit of wishful thinking, he replied that neural implants and artificial pancreases already exist, and the distance is not as big as it seems.

Here’s what he said:
“I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies’ stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, ageing. Then nanotechnology will let us live for ever. Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively.
Within 25 years we will be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath, or go scuba-diving for four hours without oxygen. Heart-attack victims – who haven’t taken advantage of widely available bionic hearts – will calmly drive to the doctors for a minor operation as their blood bots keep them alive.
Nanotechnology will extend our mental capacities to such an extent we will be able to write books within minutes. If we want to go into virtual-reality mode, nanobots will shut down brain signals and take us wherever we want to go. Virtual sex will become commonplace. And in our daily lives, hologram like figures will pop in our brain to explain what is happening. So we can look forward to a world where humans become cyborgs, with artificial limbs and organs.”

Immortality, living forever in a perpetual state of youth, never growing old and dying to make way for the young…
      Problem.
      BIG problem.
Leaving aside the massive population and economic difficulties, think about this:
Item, one fast-breeding species that’s become effectively immortal.
Now, consider the perspective on this from an extrasolar civilization.
A fast-breeding, environmentally-catastrophic species that is unremittingly and pathologically violent. Now being forced by it’s own increasingly insane population-pressure to spread out across space as quickly as possible. One that is determined to rshape the galaxy and cultures of it’s inhabitants according to how Humanity thinks things should be.
I’m sure they’d have a name for Humanity at that point.

      They’d call Humanity ‘The Flood’.
And they’d feel every bit as threatened as if the videogame namesake showed up here in reality.

      And they’d treat Humanity appropriately.
By either extermination, or near-extermination and reducing Humanity’s technological-base to a ‘harmless’ level. Think pre-steam engine eras.
Forget ‘fighting back’, not going to happen.
When civilizations as the ones I mention decide to deal with a lesser-advanced species there are no guns, bombs, or beam weapons to worry about.
      They use nano-weapons.
They drop some delivery modules into the atmosphere and the nanites enter the targetted species, inflicting death in a sizeable percantage of a planetary population by neural failure and selectively damaging brain tissue regarding intellectual capability in the survivors while also suppressing or re-writing the genetic markers that govern brain development and intellectual capacity to severely limit the potential of future generations of offspring and thus keep the threat from arising again.
      All nice, clean and neat.
If Humanity makes the grave error of crossing the line into immortality for individuals, they will become a threat-species that the galaxy will definitely notice as this world is under close surveillance already.
They’ll act, they won’t talk, won’t discuss and won’t delay. They’ll be protecting themselves and the situation of a lesser-advanced species that doesn’t even possess more than one-way remote-probe delivery to other in-system targets isn’t something of great concern to them.
