A local citizen in Oklahoma City has recorded what the Geiger counter called dangerous levels of background radiation.

This comes a week after the announcement that levels of radiation spewing from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant are higher then ever.

Now we have the Oklahoma DEQ admitting that they are “Aware” of the alarming youtube viewing showing what the geiger counter called dangerous background levels.

So, in light of this alarming YouTube video from FireByNight, we again contacted DEQ’s Skylar McElhaney and asked if they were still monitoring the radiation issue and also if they were aware of the YouTube video that is getting a lot of attention online.

Via email, McElhaney wrote that DEQ monitors the air and “does not sample rain water.” She included a link in the email, taking us to an EPA.gov RadNet page that shows the “Near-Real-Time Gross Gamma Count Rate Data in Oklahoma City” between April 12 and August 10, 2011.

Other than small spikes on approximately April 30 and May 20, the gamma radiation monitored was pretty steady, and as McElhaney noted in her email “we feel that there is not a public health threat related to radiation in Oklahoma City.”

Interestingly, McElhaney also wrote that DEQ was “aware of the YouTube video.”

Plants are dying in the middle of central Tokyo and it could be because of the increase in radiation. One irony of the radioactive fallout from Fukushima is that people in Japan are starting to pay more attention to nature. The picture above was taken on the sidewalk of Hakusan Dori in Bunkyo-ku in Tokyo, and was uploaded on July 30.

The air radiation in Bunkyo-ku has been higher than the official Tokyo number (measured in Shinjuku-ku, western central Tokyo), along with several other eastern “ku” (special wards of Tokyo). The person who took the picture says, “About 30% of azaleas on the sidewalk are completely dead. Ginkgo leaves are browning.”

Japan is considering the possibility of creating a back-up capital city in case they need to abandon Tokyo. A new panel from Japan’s Ministry of Land and Infrastructure will consider the possibility of moving some of Tokyo’s capital functions to another big city, like Osaka.

At the end of April I cautioned all my readers that there is nothing more important in the entire world now than taking our daily iodine supplements. An appropriate public health response to the nuclear disaster in Japan starts with iodine because any lack of the nutritional type of iodine will attract the radioactive type like honey attracts bees.

The last thing anyone wants to be walking around with is a thyroid so starving for iodine that it will readily take on the nasty radioactive isotope of iodine when exposed to it. Dr. David Brownstein has tested 5,000 of his patients and has found out that 95 percent of them are iodine deficient and other iodine researchers he has talked to found similar trends in their patients as well.
