Just a Matter of Time

Our Founders understood that no civilization could last forever. No matter how altruistic their intentions, how carefully they studied history or how diligently they sought to constrain government power, they knew the fate of the republic they created could not be guaranteed beyond a single generation. I wrote the obituary for the United States in the weeks preceding Barack Obama’s election. That such a person could even be considered for the office of President was a sure symptom of impending death though it was preceded by many other symptoms. All that remains is to conduct the autopsy and issue the death certificate. Undoubtedly, the cause of death is suicide. The November election will select the pallbearers and the executor of the estate. Whether Americans choose Obama’s express train or the establishment Republican walking trail, the destination is the same graveyard. For the sake of brevity, I shall hence forward refer to Establishment Republicans as ERs. Let’s first be clear who they are.
