The commentary in China’s Liberation Army Daily falls short of a formal government statement, but marks the strongest high-level comment yet from Beijing about tensions with the Philippines over disputed seas where both countries have sent ships to assert their claims.
On Monday, American and Filipino troops launched two weeks of annual naval drills amid the stand-off between Beijing and Manila, which have accused each other of encroaching on sovereign seas near the Scarborough Shoal.
“Anyone with clear eyes saw long ago that behind these drills is reflected a mentality that will lead the South China Sea issue down a fork in the road towards military confrontation and resolution through armed force,” said the commentary in the Chinese paper, which is the chief mouthpiece of the People’s Liberation Army.

Terrorist group blows up pipeline in Syria ~ link ~
An armed “terrorist group” has blown up an oil pipeline near Abu Hamam area in the eastern city of Dayr al-Zawr, Syrian media reported.
Armed terrorists targeted the 12 inches pipeline that transfers oil from al-Tank field of al-Furat Petroleum Company to Alti-Two Station, SANA reported on Saturday.
The attack caused the loss of 2000 barrels of oil, despite oil pumping suspension by the company.
Calm has returned to most parts of Syria since a ceasefire, brokered by the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was announced on April 12, although there have been reports of sporadic clashes in some parts of the country with Damascus accusing armed groups of violating the truce by continuing attacks on government forces.

The Associated Press reported that after several hours of negotiations by Security Council experts, Russia circulated a merged text, and council ambassadors met behind closed doors to discuss it.

UN Observers tour Homs ~ link ~ An advance team of United Nations observers have visited Syria’s central province of Homs to monitor a cease-fire brokered by UN-Arab league envoy, Kofi Annan.
“A team of international observers visited the province of Homs and met the governor,” SANA reported on Saturday.
The observers met with the provincial governor and toured the Baba Amr neighborhood in the city of Homs.

The European Monetary Crisis: No Exit in EU ~ link ~ Peter Praet, Chief Economist of the European Central Bank, defended the ECB’s policies at Levy Institute’s annual Minsky meeting at the Ford Foundation this past week in New York. In his remarks, he retreaded the EU’s wheels with the same rhetoric of inflation fighting and fiscal tightening that drove the EU off the road and into the ditch to begin with. The effect of his pronouncements of EU intentions was to only further reveal the growing gap between reality and ECB ideology over their inability to successfully address the euro crisis.
Europe risks becoming a real lived version of Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit in which its constituent countries are locked into a dysfunctional currency union for an eternity. Euro entry has been a Faustian bargain. There is presently no exit clause once joining except exiting the European Union itself. Entry promised membership into a rich club of nations in which Europe’s southern periphery and former Soviet bloc areas to the east would converge with Europe’s richest nations. The devil of membership, however, is in the details. Euro rules preclude a wholesale list of policies historically demonstrated to develop nations.

Debt is a “soft” form of slavery. In America today, it is not legal to bind people up with chains and force them to work for you, but that doesn’t mean that there are not millions upon millions of slaves in this country. When you borrow money, you willingly become a servant to the lender. Sadly, there are millions of Americans that will spend the rest of their lives working to pay off their debts but they will never escape the endless debt slavery that they have gotten themselves into. When you add up all forms of debt in the United States at this point, it comes to more than 54 trillion dollars. That is more than $178,000 for every man, woman and child in America. We truly are one nation under debt, and we have created the biggest debt bubble in the history of the planet. Unfortunately, all debt bubbles eventually burst, and when this one bursts the consequences are going to be unlike anything ever seen before.
When most Americans think of the “U.S. debt problem”, they tend to only think of the U.S. national debt. Well, that certainly is horrifying, but it is only a small part of the overall problem.
The chart posted below shows the growth of total debt in the United States over the last several decades. Total credit market debt owed was less than 5 trillion dollars back in 1980, but now it is over 54 trillion dollars….

There has been no society in the history of the world that has ever been 100% safe. No matter how much money the federal government spends on “homeland security”, the truth is that bad things will still happen. Our world is a very dangerous place and it is becoming increasingly unstable. The federal government could turn the entire country into one giant prison camp, but that would still not keep us safe. It is inevitable that bad stuff will happen in life. But we have a choice. We can choose to live in fear or we can choose to live as free men and women. Our forefathers intended to establish a nation where liberty and freedom would be maximized. But today we are told that we have to give up our liberties and our freedoms and our privacy for increased security. But is such a trade really worth it? Just think of the various totalitarian societies that we have seen down throughout history. Have any of them ever really thrived? Have their people been happy? Unfortunately, the U.S. federal government has decided that the entire country needs to be put on lock down. Nearly everything that we do today is watched and tracked, and personal privacy is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Many of the things that George Orwell wrote about in 1984 are becoming a reality, and that is a very frightening thing. The United States is supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Sadly, we are rapidly becoming the exact opposite of that.
I don’t know about you, but I never signed up to live in North Korea. When I was growing up I was taught that repressive regimes such as North Korea are “the bad guys” and that America is where “the good guys” live.
So why do we want to be just like North Korea?
Coverup and Denial: America’s Gulf Oil Disaster Revisited ~ link ~April 20 marked the two year anniversary of BP’s Gulf of Mexico disaster. Until Fukushima Daiichi’s catastrophic nuclear meltdown, it was the largest ever environmental calamity. It’s devastated the lives of millions of area residents. It contaminated America’s Gulf. Nothing in it’s safe to eat. The incident’s been plagued by coverup, denial, and Obama administration complicity to assure nothing slows hazardous deep water drilling.
In 2010, as disastrous conditions unfolded, Dahr Jamail reported firsthand from the Gulf. He’s now discussing the aftermath. On April 18, he headlined, “Gulf seafood deformities alarm scientists,” saying: “Eyeless shrimp and fish with lesions are becoming common, with BP oil pollution believed to be the likely cause.” He quoted Louisiana State University’s Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences Dr. Jim Cowan saying: “And in my 20 years working on red snapper, looking at somewhere between 20 and 30,000 fish, I’ve never seen anything like this either.”
