GENEVA – The UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session on Syria this Friday to probe last Friday’s massacre in the town of Houla, diplomats involved in planning the meeting in Geneva said on Wednesday.
The United States, Qatar, Turkey and the European Union led the push for the special session, which will be the fourth time Syria has been hauled before the UN rights body since unrest broke out in the country early last year.

Western officials continue to cite Friday’s Houla massacre as they move to diplomatically isolate Syria, and France’s new president is following in the footsteps of his predecessor in pushing for a UN-backed war.
But what exactly happened in Houla? The UN’s new report is adding even more questions than it answers, and is once again throwing the rebels’ version of the event, which has been reported unaltered by US officials, into serious doubt.
The rebel version of the story of the Houla massacre is that Syrian tanks and artillery surrounded the tiny town and started shelling indiscriminately, massacring well over 100 innocent civilians for no apparent reason. Though the death toll seems roughly correct, the UN report revealed that the shelling killed less than 20 people, with the vast majority executed by gunfire at close range. This of course makes no sense, since the rebel reports from Friday didn’t even have troops entering the town, claiming that rebel forces had chased them away after artillery fire on a protest.

“In other words, these atrocities are conjectured to have been carried out at the hands of the extremist Wahhabis and al-Qaeda elements who are notorious for targeting women and children in their terrorist operations,” the political analyst further elaborated.
The analyst also explained that the fact that those murdered in Houla were mainly Shia Muslims reinforces the conjecture that the massacre was perpetrated by the “Wahhabis” who “nurse inveterate loathing” toward Shia Muslims.

On May, 2012, the BBC published a photo showing several rows of dead Iraqi children to illustrate a recent massacre in the Syrian city of Houla.
As the BBC came under fire for trying to sell a NATO-led attack on Syria, a BBC spokesman has shirked responsibility for checking the authenticity of the image saying the image had been used “with a clear disclaimer.”
“We used it with a clear disclaimer saying it could not be independently verified”, said the spokesperson.
“Somebody is using my images as a propaganda against the Syrian government to prove the massacre”, said Getty Images photographer Marco Di Lauro whose photo was used by the BBC.
Independent media outlets have criticized the British media for turning into “a rolling propaganda mouthpiece for the claims of dubious anonymous ‘activists’”, as described by American journalist Alex Jones’ website prisonplanet.com.
Earlier in February, British newspaper The Independent also reported that “President Assad’s security forces have indiscriminately killed scores of newborn babies in Homs.”
However, documented evidence showed the source of the reports was a London-based organization calling itself ‘Syrian Observatory for Human Rights’.
Prisonplanet.com has accused the British media of trying “to sell a NATO-led attack on Syria” while analysts say the statement “it could not be independently verified” has turned into a trademark of media coverage of the events in Syria.
Syrian opposition incites foreign military intervention says Russian Foreign Minister ~ link ~
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says the Syrian opposition is seeking foreign military intervention and inciting a civil war in the country.
Speaking at a news conference in Moscow on Tuesday, Lavrov said the chairman of the Syrian National Council, Burhan Ghalioun, “called on all the Syrian opposition forces to continue – as he called it – the struggle for freedom until the UN Security Council approves external military intervention. That is a direct incitement to civil war.”
The Russian foreign minister also accused certain countries of trying to disrupt the implementation of a peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. “Certain countries, as if the Security Council hadn’t made a request for such an investigation, are starting to use these events, the events of May 25 (the Houla killings), as a pretext for putting forward demands for the necessity of taking military action,” Lavrov said.

A 61-year-old Greek pensioner has hung himself from a tree in a public park after succumbing to the pressure of crushing debt. A note in his pocket indicates he is merely the latest in a rash of economic crisis-induced suicides.
The pensioner’s lifeless body was found dangling by an attendant in a public park not far from his home in the suburb of Nikaia, Athens. The attendant also found a suicide note in the man’s pocket, The Athens news reports.
