In the 1960′s television show Star Trek you would hear the phrase “phasers on stun” at least once in the show.  They would then reach to their belts, remove their trusty phasers and release a beam of light that would stun their adversary.

It was a kinder, gentler Star Trek back then.  Now, it’s just “blast ‘em!”.

If you were a child of that era playing Star Trek and using your imaginary phaser required a good ability to make the requisite noise -

You had to be really good to do this with a minimum of saliva running down your chin.

Well, one man has overcome that problem by building his own homemade phaser!

Upon viewing that video two thoughts came to mind – that solves the problem of the eventual Balloon Rebellion in the near future and you have to wonder if he can do this in his garage what are well funded scientists doing in their clandestine labs.

We know that a Canadian scientist is on version 4 of a  Star Trek inspired Tricorder – mobile lab in a box and who knows before this machine becomes marketable.

Then there is the already released X-Ray app for your iPhone called iNaked.  I kid you not.  4.5 million downloads and counting.  I would post a link but all of the web pages seem to like to prove its application at the local pool or beach so no links from this page. Look it up if you feel the need.

No, the one that concerns me the most is the Terahertz powered see through walls cell phone!

Consumer applications of such technology could range from finding studs in walls to authentication of important documents. Businesses could use it to detect counterfeit money. Manufacturing companies could apply it to process control.  There are also more communication channels available in terahertz than the range currently used for wireless communication, so information could be more rapidly shared at this frequency.

Terahertz can also be used for imaging to detect cancer tumors, diagnosing disease through breath analysis, and monitoring air toxicity.

“There are all kinds of things you could be able to do that we just haven’t yet thought about,” said Dr. O, holder of the Texas Instruments Distinguished Chair.

That’s exactly what I am concerned about Doc – the things you haven’t thought about yet!

This technology should sound familiar to you.  It’s the same one being used in airport body scanners all over the United States.  You know, the ones that bombard your entire body with sevens years worth of dangerous radiation to see if you are a dangerous terrorist.  The ones they claimed were not dangerous but have since been outed as otherwise.

And, just think you can now have that in your hand inside of your smartphone!
