The phrase “bloody hell!” is an overused expression that originated in Britain.  The phrase has since emigrated to Australia and is now firmly owned by the Aussies.   It is an expression of surprise, disgust, anger, and/or amusement.

It firmly applies to this story on all levels.

German and Italians scientists have found the oldest usable sample of human blood – 5,300 years old according to them.

It was found in the mummified remains of “Otzi”, Italy’s prehistoric iceman who roamed the Alps some 5,300 years ago.  “Otzi” (named after the area he was found) was found frozen in a glacier.  The German and Italian scientists said they used an atomic force microscope to examine tissue sections from a wound caused by an arrow that killed the Copper Age man.

“They really looked similar to modern-day blood samples,” said Professor Albert Zink, 46, the German head of the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman at the European Academy in Bolzano, the capital of Italy’s German-speaking Alto-Adige region.

“So far, this is the clearest evidence of the oldest blood cells,” he said by telephone, adding that the new technique might now be used to examine mummies from Egypt.

First a fully preserved baby wooly mammoth is found and the first thought is to clone it.

And now they discover the oldest HUMAN blood and want to use the technique on Egyptian Mummies.

Hmm, wonder what they are considering doing with THAT BLOOD?!
