$176 million US Navy Spy Drone Crashes On Mission Over Maryland
A $176 million U.S. Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk spy drone crashed while conducting a surveillance training mission part of a 30,000 domestic drone deployment.
As the United States moves forward with its plans to deploy 30,000 drones over US skies the FAA has authorized 6 test sites to integrate military drones into civilian airspace and to assist local law enforcement.
Today one of the test drones crashed in a marsh near Salisbury, Maryland while flying on a test mission after the remote pilot lost control, according to military official.
Jamie Cosgrove, a spokeswoman for the Unmanned Aviation and Strike Weapons Patuxent River, tells reporters that it was the United States most sophisticated drone, the $176 million RQ-4A Global Hawk, that crashed during what the military says was a routine training flight.
The RQ-4a’s and other drones are training to be integrated with a nationwide deployment of tens of thousands of ground based tracking censors that will provide real-time detection, identification, and tracking of targets on the ground.
The drone that crashed is said to have been acquired from a previous program that has developed tactics and doctrine for the employment of high-altitude unmanned patrol aircraft since 2006.
So far the FAA has given out licenses for 63 drone bases to operate inside the United States.
Police are already training to operate drones which will eventually be weaponize with tear gas, tasers and rubber bullets.
WBOC recorded the video of the crash site below from a helicopter which showed smoke rising and small brush fires surrounding the wreckage.

The drone crashed into a tributary of the Nanticoke River, a U.S. Coast Guard official said. The crash site has been blocked to recreational boat traffic while the agency investigates, the Coast Guard official said.
As soon as Navy personnel lost contact with the unmanned vehicle, a piloted aircraft was dispatched to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where it came upon the wreckage and determined that it was unlikely anyone on the ground had been hurt, Navy officials told CNN.
The crash occurred at about 12:11 p.m., near Bloodworth Island in Dorchester County, the Navy said.

The drone can fly for 30 hours without refueling at altitudes as high as 11 miles. It is typically used for reconnaissance. Of the five drones based at southern Maryland’s Naval Air Station Patuxent River, four are in routine training and one is deployed with the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet, the officials said.
The basic RQ-4A Global Hawk UAV, manufactured for the U.S. Air Force by Northrop-Grumman, is the largest and most advanced drone in the U.S. military, according to the Navy. It is 44 feet long, has a 116-foot wingspan and weighs 25,600 lbs.
