The nature of the Syrian crisis has changed. The process of destabilization that was to open the path for legal military intervention by the Atlantic Alliance has failed. Removing its mask, the United States has publicly announced the possibility of attacking Syria without the approval of the Security Council, as it also did in Kosovo. Washington must be pretending not to have noticed that the Russia of Vladimir Putin is not that of Boris Yeltsin. After being assured of Chinese support, Moscow literally fired two warning shots in the direction of Washington. The continuing violations of international law by NATO and the GCC threaten to unleash a global conflict.

Colonel Vadim Koval, spokesman of the Strategic Missile Troops of the Russian Federation (RSVN) confirmed the test of a Topol—launched from a silo near the Caspian Sea, but has not confirmed that of the Bulava from a submarine in the Mediterranean. But the firing was observed from all over the Near East, Israel and Armenia and there is no other known armament that leaves similar tracings in the sky.

The message is clear : Moscow is ready for world war if NATO and the GCC do not comply with the international obligations as defined in the Annan Plan and persist in aiding terrorism.

The Obama administration said Tuesday that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime and warned that the Arab country’s 15-month conflict could become even deadlier.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. was “concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria.”

The units being prepared for an intervention are the 76th Division of airborne forces (an especially experienced unit of the Russian army), the 15th Army Division, as well as special forces from a brigade of the Black Sea fleet, which has a base in the Syrian port of Tartus.

The details of the operational plan are being prepared by the working parties of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, to which most of the post-Soviet states belong, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, to which China and Russia belong.

The Obama Administration has withdrawn its negotiators from Pakistan after failing to reach a deal with the Pakistani government on reopening the border to occupied Afghanistan. The border has been closed since November, when US warplanes attacked Pakistani border outposts, killing 24 soldiers.

Pakistan’s parliament had conditioned a deal on the US apologizing for the November attack and stopping all drone strikes against the tribal areas. The cabinet has suggested that it would accept less than what parliament was asking, provided it included a significant increase in fees for trucks crossing the border. The US, for its part, has spurned both Pakistani demands, refusing to apologize and escalating the drone attacks even further. The US has also condemned the calls for higher fees as “price gouging.”

Syria accuses US of supporting terrorists, meddling ~ link ~ Syria has accused the United States of encouraging more massacres in the country and of meddling in its internal affairs, saying Washington supports armed terrorist groups operating in Syria. The Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Tuesday saying that the US is covering up terrorist crimes and distorting the facts about what is happening in Syria.

“The US administration is pushing forth with its flagrant interference in Syria’s internal affairs and its backing of armed terrorist groups,” read the statement. It added, “US statements distort the truth and what is happening on the ground while encouraging armed terrorist groups to carry out more massacres… not only in al-Haffeh but throughout the country.”

Syria deploys helicopters as clashes rage north of Homs ~ link ~ Syria continues to approach a full-scale state of civil war tonight, as major fighting is reported in the northern towns of the Homs Province, and the Syrian military is said to have deployed helicopter gunships to fight rebels.

Fighting has been growing, particularly in Homs since last week, when the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) declared itself no longer bound by the UN brokered ceasefire and started launching attacks.

Meanwhile, Israel’s deputy chief of the general staff has warned Syria has the “biggest chemical weapons arsenal in the world,” which it could use to threaten the Jewish state.
“Syria has built up the biggest chemical weapons arsenal in the world and has missiles and rockets capable of reaching any part of Israeli territory,” Major General Yair Naveh said in remarks delivered Sunday night and carried on Israeli military radio on Monday.

Remarks by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble on Monday directly contradict assurances by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that there were “no strings attached” to last weekend’s rescue deal for Spanish banks.

The bailout of Spanish banks was hastily agreed at an emergency telephone conference by euro zone finance ministers at the weekend in order to prevent a possible meltdown of the European banking system. The deal came after intense pressure was placed on the Spanish government by the US and European governments, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and international banks.

Actually the journalists were not wholly wrong: at the time of writing there had been a limited fightback and the consensus across Spain was that people were apathetic.

The immediate cause of the current global crisis was generalized property and financial bubbles in the developed world. Spain was an extreme case of this, with a million housing start-ups taking place in 2007 (more than in Britain, France and Germany combined). This generated massive profits for construction companies and banks which invested heavily internationally (including buying airports and high street banks in Britain). Rising house prices fuelled consumer spending, while half of the jobs then being created in the EU were in the Spanish state.

When this mega-bubble burst – coinciding with the international credit freeze, building literally stopped overnight. In December 2008 only one single house was built in the whole of Spain! Loans of hundreds of billions of euros by regional banks (known as ‘cajas’) to estate agents and construction firms turned ‘bad’ and, when recession led to mass unemployment, the banks cruelly evicted hundreds of thousands from their homes leaving them with a mountain of properties they would never sell.

Striking coal miners clash with police in Spain ~ link ~ On Tuesday, thousands of angry coal mine workers in the northern provinces of Asturias and Leon blocked roads and highways with burning tires to press their demand that the government reverse its decision to cut mining subsidies, the Associated Press reported.

As riot police moved in, demonstrators used sling shots and fired home-made rockets at police. Police retaliated with tear gas grenades and baton charges as they tried to bring the situation under control.

Some 8,000 mineworkers from over 40 coal mines in northern Spain are staging a nationwide strike against the government’s decision to slash subsidies to the mining sector by 64 percent. The nationwide strike action has now entered its second week.

Independent Scotland has better economic plans ~ link ~ On Monday 11 June, the Scottish government’s finance minister, John Swinney, accused British Chancellor George Osborne of using the eurozone crisis as an excuse for Britain’s latest drop into a double-dip recession. Scotland plans to hold a referendum aimed to end a 300-year union with England. The Scottish National Party is planning for a referendum in the autumn of 2014, however Britain’s Conservative led coalition government is demanding for an earlier vote, due to a warning of uncertainty it could bring to the economy.
