DIY: Portable, Propane Water Heater for Camping, Showers, Off-Grid

When it comes to camping, the off-grid lifestyle, or disaster survival, having hot water quickly becomes a top priority.

I’ve used an almost identical set-up for several years and have had excellent results.  There are a few different models of on-demand, tankless water heaters on the market, but I’ve had nothing but praise for the Eccotemp L5 Portable Tankless Water Heater.

When I was working on the Elysian Fields Project, this little heater was a lifesaver!  It produced great water flow, plenty of hot water, and barely sipped any fuel.  A standard 20-lb barbeque tank will last well over a month of regular showering and dishwashing.

I still use it and bring it on camping trips with me even though I have a small RV now, and offer it up to my fellow campers.  I set-up a 10′x10′ pop-up canopy with sides, add a small Shur-Flo 12v pump and battery, and have an instant community showering facility!  These can typically be found for $125-250 depending on the model and make a great tangible investment for your disaster contingency plans!

The nicer, “slightly more expensive but well worth it” model is the new Eccotemp FVI-12-LP High Capacity Propane Tankless Water Heater.
