Accused Murderers Dragged from Jail by Mob, Burned Alive
Angry and frustrated over the lack of safety in the area, a Bolivian mob dragged two Brazilians being jailed as murder suspects out of their cells, beat them, and burned them alive.
Just as the mob was angry their area had been plagued by drug traffickers and other criminals, local politicians say they operated under the same lawlessness.
Councilwoman Claudio Rojas told the Associated Press, “It’s barbarous what occurred Tuesday night, but people are tired of so much insecurity. No one is in charge of this town.” Adding, “Criminals do whatever they please.”
The mob was about 400 people strong when the stormed the jail, dragged out the 20-something-year-old suspects, beat them, and savagely lit them on fire in the street.
The two were accused of killing three Bolivians and injuring two others earlier that day. The reason for the shooting had not yet been determined when the mob took things into their own hands.
The incidents took place in San Matias which sits along the Brazil-Bolivia border where police and other law officials are said to be scarce.
The men killed were Rafael Max Dias and Jefferson Castro Lima.
Lynchings have grown more common in recent years, with an estimated 16 since 2009, 13 occurring in the first six months of 2010 alone.
