Who Wants a Free DVR?

Last month we published the video Spy Car Protects Against Unscrupulous Cops, in which “spy car” owner Rick Rynerson gave an overview of all the tech he had installed in his car to provide an impressive level of protection. In addition to the cameras, audio recording microphones, two wireless outputs, and more, was a 500GB DVR.

Realizing that better tech is always being developed and that other individuals have different information, Rick and the organization he founded, Veterans Against Police Abuse (VAPA), is soliciting your help to identify the DVR that meets criteria he’s specified (details below). If you are the person who informs him of that DVR, VAPA will purchase it for you.

The idea is simple – crowdsource the information-gathering, reward the person who finds the best DVR, and then encourage others to safeguard themselves and their property by purchasing the system.

Here’s the gig. Find us a mobile DVR (ie can be put into a car and survive the heat), that has at least 3 channels of audio, and 3 channels of video, and can wirelessly connect to a router (Wireless N connection speed), and supports the video files it stores being accessed via FTP (without the need to use their client software to download the files).

Post your links here to what you find, with a brief highlight of the key points. The complete system with capabilities listed above (note this doesn’t include the cameras or mics, or the router) cannot cost more than $400.

On October first, we’ll look at what’s collected here and based on price, and capability, we will select the system that we think is the best. The lower the price will factor in greatly, but it won’t be the only factor.

We will pick the best one, and for your research – we will purchase that system for you.

What we’re going to then do, is modify some software we’re working on for the ProtectAllSecurity.Com DVR we use, so that it works with this cheaper yet still very capable DVR. We’ll then post that software up for free, and what it means is that those who are driving with that DVR, and who have a router in their car (MiFi, Sprint OverDrive, etc) will be able to press ONE button, and have their DVR video downloaded remotely to their home computer, or to a cloud service like Amazon.

You guys know better than we do, there is a lot of technology out there, help us find the cheapest and best alternative, so that we can get that technology into the greatest number of American hands, to best provide accountability!

So get on it! Find a DVR that meets the specs outlined, register at the VAPA forum and post your finding.
