Fort Bragg California~This unusual beach is well worth a look, if only to see the way nature has reclaimed a garbage dump.While walking on the polished glass it is definitely a spectacular site for the kids and adults. Only minutes from Fort Bragg town center. If you are into Geocaching there are 4 caches within easy walking starting at Glass Beach going north along the undeveloped headlands. In the summer one can pick blackberries on the walk down to the beach. The historical aspect cannot be ignored. The beach has at least four different areas that were, at one time, the town dump. The oldest of these, to the extreme south of the main beach and currently with mildly difficult access, is more laden with ‘treasures’ than the rest of the beach. This one probably started as the town dump much earlier than the recorded date of 1949. This one, in all probability, closed that year. The third and more wide expanse of beach with a lot of glass on it continued as the others: from 1949 – 1967. The city closed the beach to dumping in 1967. The Caspar Landfill became the dump for the entire coastal region until it too, was closed in the late 1990s. Now all the trash is hauled away to some inland area land fill.
