Border Agents Shot at After Finding Drug Smugglers, 63 Bundles of Pot
Border Patrol agents were reportedly shot at by at least one Mexican national on the Mexico side of the border late last week near Los Ebanos, Texas.
The shooting occurred on Friday at around 5:30 p.m. as Border Patrol officials said agents saw people loading bundles into a Ford Expedition after having used rafts to move the bundles from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River to the U.S. side.
The five agents called for backup and headed to towards the SUV. Shortly after the vehicle took off, the driver spotted the Border Patrol agents, drove back towards the Mexican side of the river, and ditched the vehicle.
Agents chased the driver, who had taken off on foot and climbed up a nearby tree, and that is when the shooting began.
The man in the tree opened fire on the agents, forcing them to draw their weapons and return fire. In the end, no agents were injured and they recovered 63 bundles of marijuana, weighing more than 1,000 pounds. Five smugglers were also arrested.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the FBI are investigating the incident, and the smugglers were being held without bond pending a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
Eduardo Camarillo Valdez, Jose Maria Garza Lara, Sergio Emanuel Camarillo Valdez, Arturo Hernandez Ruiz, and Andres Gonzalez Jordan were charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
