NYC ~As Hurricane Sandy churned toward the northeast coast, New York City slowed to a crawl.Although the center of the storm wasn’t expected to hit the city until early Tuesday morning, the region’s transportation systems shut down on Sunday, prompting hundreds of businesses to close on Monday. Many school districts, including New York City’s, also canceled classes, leaving swaths of the city deserted as families huddled indoors.At least 50 homes in Queens burned after Hurricane Sandy sent floodwaters gushing into New York’s five boroughs. The colossal storm submerged cars, tunnels and the subway system, and darkened vast swaths of the nation’s most populous city. Sandy, which weakened as it passed over the coast, shaped up to be among the worst storms in New York history, rivaling the blizzards of 1888 and 1947. Two deaths were reported in Queens and more than 684,000 were without power in the region, according to Con Ed.The estimated damage will cost $20 Billion.

Breaking Now ~The devastation from the fire burning in the Breezy Point section of the Rockaways is growing. Authorities now say at least 80 and as many as 100 flooded homes have been destroyed by the flames. 

Michelle Charlesworth is in Staten Island, where she found this crazy scene – a tanker ran aground on Front Street. The 168-foot John B. Caddell, a water tanker, was moored about a mile away from the beach, and it was a spectacular sight that captured the devastation of the massive storm.

 

Jeff Pegues was on the scene of a fire that is burning several buildings in Rockaway Park, Queens last night.
